An Introduction To Wings3D – Day 1

Tutorial Details
  • Software: Wings3D
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Estimated Completion Time: 3+ Hours

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In today’s tutorial new Cgtuts+ author Jordy Lakiere will give us an extensive overview of the free, open source application Wings3D. In day 1 of this 2 day tutorial, Jordy will cover every aspect of the Wings3d interface. Starting off with a detailed introduction of the navigation controls and keyboard shortcuts, Jordy will then move on to not only explain the modeling tools in detail, but will also give us a practical demonstration of their capabilities by modeling a detailed Roman Eagle. This is a must watch for any artist interesting in working with Wings3D.

    I don’t understand this…
every program is soooo slow on modeling compared with blender!
why are other programs not copying their style!

    • angel

It’s a joke??…has u tried Modo or Silo (I think silo is the faster organic modeling program) ???…by the way…inside the silo page there are good tutorials but I’ve never seen a tuto in this site……

  • Teo

Thanks for this tutorial, however the video is so much compressed, it becomes unwatchable for me. I tried watching it in HD and I even downloaded the source file. It made no difference. :(

I’ve been using Wings for more than 10 years now, and I now it pretty well, but I’d like to thank to Jordy Lakiere anyway, as it’s great to see a well known site like CGTuts (finally ;-) ) hosting a tutorial for Wings…

…and logical too, as this is a great program both for people wanting to learn 3D modeling, and those, more experience, who use it for pretty nice and neat modeling. And I agree, it’s fast. I dare say one of the fastest modelers out there, once you’ve get the hand of it’s “out of the way” interface.

Just too points, if I may :

(deform) Bend : you can do some simple bends, which can be most useful for any bend/curvy pipes, horns, etc without getting into all the more complicated (granted) options that Wings offers. As I’m not sure if CGTuts allows me to give a link, just google “Simple Bend with Wings 3D” on youtube videos.

(face) Intrude (about 39min50) : It does not invert the geometry. It hollows it, and creates a shell, giving thickness to an otherwise/previously single sided mesh. ;-)

Okay, I’ll watch the second part now. :-)

Thanks for the feedback – much appreciated! I will definitely look into those things.

    @Juri Bryan
Blender rocks! at least 2.56 i honestly dont care much for 2.4. I would love to see some more blender tuts on here especially on rigging and uv editing.

    • Andreas Galster

I have to agree and disagree. The modeling workflow in general in Blender is great and very fluid, but due to the lack of BMesh the current beta version of 2.5 is somewhat hard to model with. Of course the basic tools are there but some tools are missing like bevel or bridge. Fortunately some people developed those tools as python addons as a subtitute until BMesh will make it into the official release.

  • Marcus

@Andreas: What makes you so sure BMesh will make it…into 2.6…or ever…?
we wait for it since almost 3 years now, hearing from the dev that he will make a sprint and everything is close to finish but then after several months of writing nothing on the blog he says that he was ill or had to move or some other chaos in his life.

That said, I love Blender and what it can do and I love people like Farsthary who throws out features of awesomeness at insane speed, or even if he doesn’t he makes transparent the little steps he takes.

    • Andreas Galster

Pretty obvious it’ll make it into 2.6. As soon as the bugs and todo’s are finished (bugs in a few weeks I guess) they can start focussing on BMesh and merging all the summer of code branches from last year (and other useful patches).

I mainly use Maya, but now my main computer is broken(HDD). In my laptop i have Ubuntu, I downloaded Blender just to “mess around”, i was determined to learn to use it, until i tried to navigate around in the 3d space; it was such a weird experience comparing it to the other 3d apps i had used(Maya, 3DSM, C4D, Houdini)

It’s like an awkward movement when you(try to) navigate, the same thing with object manipulation, it feels so weird and inflexible. I did like the rendering engine though, it was quick and simple…

    Maybe Wings3D will be different.

This is a great introduction on Wings and would like to have more and more tutorials here on Wings. Thanks a lot for making this tutorial.

  • Diggs

For some reason the object you are manipulating at the beginning is hardly visible.
