Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In today’s tutorial, Dimitris Katsafouros of design studio We Are Pitch Black showcases two new tools included in Cinema 4D R14, the Camera Matching Tool and the Camera Morph Tool. Instead of having a dry explanation of what the tools do, a short tv ident will be used to keep things interesting.

Camera matching is a great addition to camera mapping. It simplifies the whole process of aligning the camera and also guessing the right camera settings a photograph or video has been shot with. In this tutorial the tool gets demystified and is also used for the corridor we can see in the video above. The corridor is a real photograph that has been projected onto simple 3D geometry.

The next step will be to use the new camera tool to create a simple camera movement. The camera tool simplifies the animation process by using previously setup cameras and then morphs between them. In the end the viewer will have a great understanding of Cinema’s two new tools, while also using a mixture of photographs and 3D elements to create a short video.

    Tarcisio this is a fairly old Mac Pro bought around 2006. It’s been upgraded over the years but whatever mac you buy today will be approximately 2 times faster than this machine! So buy whatever fits your budget and just add lots of memory! That’s it!

    great video.

    One function I did not understand. How do you correctly align and scale the walls? I guess there must be some guides. And they should connect. But you moved them free around.

      Author

      Helmut camera mapping is a visual type of modelling. You just have to make sure that things LOOK good. If the planes you create are closely matching the picture and the final object created is looking good and makes sense in the other views then you’re good to go!
      You don’t have to connect the planes that make out the subway. If you want to you certainly can but they can exist as separate walls.

    Nice tutorial Dmitri but the shadow is giving me a hard time, even with cg lights added on the scene,I still don’t see shadows of the elements I put in my scene…Can you help?Thanks beforehand…

    Solved the shadow issue, if you guys have the problem make sure the camera mapped textures are in the color channel, not in the luminance…

      Hi Rudy. Sorry for the long wait. Yes if you want your camera mapped objects to receive shadows use the colour instead of the luminance channel. The rule of thumb goes like this. Use luminance to preserve the qualities of the original texture without having the other elements of the scene affecting the camera mapped objects. If you want your other objects to affect the camera mapped environment (which isn’t always the case) use the colour channel. In fact you can use a mix of those two on your scene without any issues.
