Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+. Today we’re taking a look back at Aleksey Voznesenski’s awesome tutorial on creating a jumping lamp animation in Cinema4D. This two day tutorial was originally published back in March of 2010, and proved to be very popular with our C4D users.

This tutorial is a relatively quick overview of setting up a scene with a rigged animated object in Cinema4D. Although it should be simple to follow along to anyone with a basic knowledge of Cinema 4D, this tutorial is mainly aimed at artists migrating to Cinema4D from another package. It quickly and concisely demonstrates how to use the basic modeling tools, set up a rig with bones, use constraints, change the type of keyframes, use the auto keyframe tool, clean up keyframes, work with the time line, set up lights, set up materials, apply the materials to objects and render out an animation. Everything you need to quickly get into Cinema4D.

    Great tutorial!

One question: When I try to add a Hypernurb, it’s not having any effect, it’s just coming up as a bunch of arrows on the X/Z axis. What should I do?

    Thanks!

not sure what you mean. you put an object inside a hypernurb and it smooths.

you either have to drag the object manually, or you select the object you want smoothed, and then while holding the alt key you click on the hypernurb, and then it will put it in the HN object for you.

Right i have done everything like you said to altho i got a bit confused when you just start slapping out ctrl and drag constraints also the naming of the base and BASE is confusing as hell when im listening and trying to do it, This is getting anoying now ive done everything but the leggs keep popping out and the lower grip moves of the base plate and the leggs pop out of the lower girp and they dont seem to be working at all and ive no idea whats gone wrong as i think ive done it word for word the lower grip and base plate dont stay together total confused

    YOU GO TOO FAST!!!
And your english is not so clear

You should do tutorial to teach people, not to showoff your skills as a modeler

  9. Jared says:

Great tutorial everything worked perfectly until I went to render it the lower group and pivot completely moved and so did the upper legs and the animation does not look right is there a step I am missing or something I am simply over looking please help!!!!!

  10. prasanth says:

i am not able to see the axis while using the “use model tool” , pls help

  11. Jorge says:

You’re WAY too fast! I wasn’t able to follow through a simple step without rewinding the video a couple of times. I eventually got frustrated and quit the project. I suggest you go way slower.

  12. Anthony says:

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! This tutorial has been my first attempt to actually rig joints to a model. Thank you for this!

If you don’t mind me giving just a few words of advice on your tutorial, please take your time through it. I am quite sure that you have a busy schedule and perhaps could be doing other types of work other than creating a tutorial to teach us. Hopefully, I can speak for the community as a whole that what teach is more appreciative beyond any means. So just take your time :)

Also, thank you for taking some time to EXPLAIN what some of the functions do. It was clear, concise, and to the point.

Once again, thank you for this tutorial. Can’t wait to see what you teach next!
