Final Product What You'll Be Creating
Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+. Today we have a great 2 day Cinema4D tutorial by Mountaga Kane covering the modeling, unwrapping, and texturing of a Type 97 hand grenade. Originally published back in July 2009, this tutorial proved to be a hit with our C4D users. So let’s revisit it…
In this two part video tutorial, you will go through the complete process of modeling, unwrapping, and texturing a Type 97 hand grenade, the standard fragmentation grenade that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in WWII.
In the first part, you will learn how to create the model using the lathe and boole functions in C4D, and in second, you will learn how unwrap it in BodyPaint, and paint the texture maps in Photoshop.

Nice… I really dig it
What happened with the exploding glass?
You know for a while I was thinking that I went insane and I had started imagining things… I knew i saw something about an exploding glass.. yeah what happened?
Sorry about that. It was an error in the publishing software. Look for it again on Friday:)
WOW man, thank you very much for this staff, is really first class material. Is really hard to find good information like this on the web.
You have answered me a lot of question about Cinema 4d with this tutorial. I can wait for the second part.
This looks fantastic. Though, in the beginning he makes a reference to there being images associated to the project. Are those available for download?
Really nice!
Keep the C4D tutorials coming! :)
It much easier to align points, by scaling down the size of them…
Just select BOTH points, and then scale down the axis to 0 ;)
But great tutorial :)
Thanks – I’ve just watched it and will go through it soon!
WOOP WOOP! C4D!!
Great tut, ccan’t wait for the 2nd part, want to see bodypaint in use.
Thanks dude looks great.
Now I’m seeing the reference images, but they aren’t downloading correctly… Am I the only one having problems?
I just downloaded them and it worked just fine for me
Thanks, it’s working now!
Fqantastic tut! Interesting would also be a tut on texturing it only with BodyPaint!
Zipfile with ref-images is empty :(
Try again. It should be fine now.
This is great {Y}
Great tut, thanks a million..!!
Learning by the gallons :D!!
The UV-unwrapping had me confused quite a while, till today.
Tnx
Awesome tutorial! Thank you Kane.
Any chance of a downloadable version?
keep up!
Almost made it to the end. After finishing Bodypaint UV part I can’t find render texture, only bake texture. And there is only 1 material listed in my materials pane and not for all 3 so not sure what to do.
@ Alex: i made the tut as well and i am finished with part one. bake texture seems to be the same thing. i had the same and bake the texture. dont know why u still have just one material. if u follow exact those steps the materials should be there. maybe u replay the vid to exact that position where the materials were created. maybe u find u mistake.
@Mountaga Kane: its time for the next part ;) when we’ll allowed to see it?
Thanks mate, i have learned a lot in this first part, can’t wait to see the second!
EDIT:
@ Alex: I Think u have to redo the Bodypaint 3D Setup Wizard. When he finishes this part, the 3 materials have been created. So it seems to me, that there is ur mistake. Btw. its @ 38:50 in the video.
Hope it will help to correct ur work :)
Pat
Hey Pat, thanks for for replying even faster than me. Yeah Alex when going through the Bodypaint 3D Setup Wizard make you have single material mode deselected.
Thanks, also in Body Paint I don’t have the “Set Selection” Feature. I think I still managed to set it all properly with the selecting and flatting the parts but just thought I’d point that out. The “Selection” menu bar wasn’t there, only “Select” and “set Selection” wasn’t in it.
Nevermind guys I found it, I had the Bodypaint menu in by accident and not the cinema4d. Last question, how do I change it so my highlight color is orange like in the video instead of a light grey like mine…orange looks cooler haha.
AH, new problem. When I hit fit canvas to UV the background of the canvas that is created turns to black and it shows up on the model also, any ideas?
Most likely while doing the bodypaint setup wizard you selected black as the color of your background layer, it shouldn’t be a problem because in the next part we paint over it.
Cheers
Kane, whats the release date for the next part… :(
It’s been released, should be at the top of the page.
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing this man! Can’t wait for the next tutorial, I really gotta start learning BodyPaint lol.
Finally after many many many years I had found a nice UV EDIT UNWRAP tut… very very very Thanks
Now that’s what I call a real C4D tut! Awesome. Thanks a bunch, you really know how to teach.
Very nice tut!
but i have a problem; I can’t rotate the reference image, it’s blocked in r11 :(
What can i do?… i rotated it in Photoshop but i want to know how to solve this problem.
Hi there, you may not see this image, but if you do; go ahead and email me a screen shot.
Great tutorial, has been easy to follow along. I hope I understand the process better now.
But is Fit canvas to UV new for r11? I can’t find it in r10, only Fit UV to canvas which squashes the Circular shape.
Also the shrink projection for the top gives me a different outcome: round with the indents shooting outside the circle like a star. I just used flat instead..
Thanks!
..I just ran into another problem.. On r10. After switching back from BodyPaint and baking the texture. It says “could not find all textures or shaders of the material to bake”.. Confused I try this and that, and after hitting the render button it says fuse.tif, granade.tif and fusecap.tif are missing.
In the color channel of the material editor there are links to these files but they do not excist where it is linked to. Nor in the document folder either.
Is there some step I’ve misse to creat these files in Bodypaint?
great tutorial! what version of BP are you using? – I can’t seem to save selection while in bodypaint – is there a difference between versions?
another issue – fit canvas to UV is also greyed out – something that has been mentioned above as well… seems so inconsistent – maybe that’s why I can never get a grasp of bodypaint ;)
is there any possibility to download the videos like in the zune tuts??
i like to have them on my iPhone
cheers
Hm, wouldn’t be easier to use inset (or bevel) to create grooves on body? Instead of boole.
And shift key to align vertices while making spline? (don’t know Cinema 4D, I’m modelling in 3ds Max)
i have a problem with the rendering..
i cant choose “ambient Occlusion”, it is grey, i cant klick on it :(
WOW!!!! Where is the reference image? it says on the download link it doesn’t exist! Help.
Thanks !!! Very good Tut ;)
Yeah, the reference download link is completely not working for me too.
For anyone still looking, the grenade image is just something off google images.

you cant download the images
For some reason, the link for the reference images is broken, but the file address is still in the source code of the page.
Copy this into the address bar of your browser and it should download: http://d2d04grx5ahzvh.cloudfront.net/028_C4D_HandGrenade/Reference_Images.zip
you’re my hero.
Very nice tut.
Could you please make more tutorials using Blender? I barely remenber what was the last time you did.
in my opinion, one of the best cinema 4D tutorials here on cgtuts!
PLEASE do not chew or eat food while doing your tutorials. Sounds disgusting
Thank you! Study.
I love your tuts man … I am waiting for more :D
It will be great if you make some tutorials with render setings and some advance things.
Thanks ;)
what happened whit the link?
Hey Edoneo,
I’ve removed the broken link, and added a new one to the Reference Images at the top of this page. You can now find it under the “Tutorial Details” section :) Thanks for letting us know!
Cheers
I’ve always found UV editing the most difficult in C4D, and I’ve used it for years now. I feel at last like I am finally understanding it.
I’ve watched the tutiorials so many times taking notes.
Thank you so much.
This is not a tutorial (of course, it is) This is more than that, it is a great master exhibition! Uff! Amazing!
