Construct a Detailed Type 97 Hand Grenade in Cinema 4D, BodyPaint, and Photoshop – Day 2

Aug 4th in 3D Art, Adobe Photoshop, BodyPaint 3D, Maxon Cinema 4D by Mountaga Kane

In this two part video tutorial, you will go through the complete process of modeling, unwrapping, and texturing a Type 97 hand grenade, the standard fragmentation grenade that was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in WWII.

In the first part, you learned how to create the model using the lathe and boole functions in C4D, and now you will learn how to unwrap it in BodyPaint and paint the texture maps in Photoshop.

Hi my name is Mountaga Kane, and I am a 17 year old digital artist living in Pennsylvania. When I first became interested in 3d, I decided to start out with Maxon's Cinema 4d because of its mid-range price, ease of use, and short render times. In my free time I like to watch cheesy B movies with friends, and help to moderate the 2d graphics forum: www.audigex.com.

This tutorial is Day 2 in a series - Go to Day 1

Are you talking about the show or movie? For the show I can’t find too many episodes. As for the movie I saw it on HBO and it was fantastic; great film.

Talking about the show or series that was on TV.
The Sci F channel used to air it every Sat am at 9. It was funny!
You can still find them on ebay sometimes…I have about 20 dvds.
        BTW…I’m from PA too.

How Can you be 17, live in Pennsylvania, and know how to use bodypaint? I can’t wrap my head around that. There’s almost no documentation available and I know where to find almost every tutorial series. Kudos lol. This was a great tutorial! More modeling tuts in C4D would be much appreciated.

Very good techniques. Did get a bit messy in video 2 around 25 minutes when you make the specular map. A lot of “whoops” and saying one thing and doing another – but apart fom that all good.

Hey! Thanks again for the tutorial. It was the stepping stone I needed to understand the process better.
Just to make sure I had understood it I modelled a US MK-II grenade using your techniques. Outcome looks like this:
      http://www.ardillamedia.com/work/24mk2_grenade.png

A bit low-poly here and there and I need to get better at texturing, but now I know the process!

Sorry to have not seen your post Anders. Amazing model! It’s always great to see someone take the techniques and make them their own, hope to see more from you.
