In this tutorial Clinton Jones will demonstrate how to model his version of Clank, from the hit PlayStation game Ratchet and Clank, using Cinema 4D. You will learn many different techniques, from the basic steps needed to model the head and body, to the more complicated functions needed to add some pretty serious detail to stay true to the character.

i really have problems with these videos! its soo annoying :( instead of it taking 20mins i end up spending an hour trying to get it to play, it loads a small bit at a time and i need to keep skipping ahead and then skipping back for it to load another few seconds… anyone else having this problem?

Thanks a lot for this tuto.

I hesitate a lot to add the following comment because it’s a free beginner tutorial and you said in the video your are still learing (so am I). But just for information, from what I learn your method for modeling is the very wrong way of do it. You finish with a totally mess up polygon topology. It cause you a lot of trouble like in the top part of the head and so on. If you have started with an even topology for the head you can knife, extrude etc to create these pieces from one single object. And in the end with your kind of model it’s a nightmare to texture it properly.

Hope you understand my bad english, I just want to open discuss, don’t want to be rude (not easy with my limited vocabulary).

    thanks again for your time.

No I TOTALLY agree with you. I’ve never had any training, and I don’t know how to model “correctly” I guess you could say. Like I said, “sill learning” you know. But trust me, i’m with you, I need to learn how to do these things. It feels like i’m doing it VERY strangely. But hey, looks like him in the end! =D

      Hi

I’m a beginner too. I watched the first three video’s and I can’t hardly wait to make my own version. I didn’t begin yet because I was highly curious about how you do these things in C4D and I wanted to first watch all the video’s to get an overall idea of the process.

Now, I am also very interested in what Raoul said … I do know that there are some things about polygon topology that indeed are important considering modeling.
It would be a blast if someone could add a comprehensive video to explain the difference of approach. People could learn so much from that …

Anyway … great tutorial that showed me tools and methods I didn’t use yet. I hope to see a lot of new C4D tutorials like this one.

      Keep it up!

  19. beesh says:

    Clinton,
Thank you so much for this free tutorial!
It has been an invaluable resource for someone like myself learning C4D. All of the techniques you have shown will be so useful for further design and creation – which is what I believe to be the point of these tuts.

Here is a small png of where I’m at with your tutorial so far:

As for the reference image that is so in demand on these posts – What I did was enlarge the video screen of Clinton’s tutorial when he’s showing the sketch image, did a screen capture, into photoshop and adjusted levels, size, etc and there you go. No hunting required! ;)

    Thanks again Clinton,
    Brian

  20. John Corbitt says:

Clinton, great job for a first time. And in spite of maybe some alternate ways of doing things, as suggested by others, (some not very graciously I might add) I learned a great deal from watching your tuts. Please keep it up. I look forward to the upcoming ones.

  21. Ley.on says:

    Hey Clinton,

    Great beginner tut you made!
I am also a beginner in c4d and slowly getting there…

if i may give you one advice in the interest of preventing rsi, use shortkeys 1,2 and 3 to move, zoom, and orbit in cinema, also F1 to F5 lets you skip viewports and E,R,T are the 3 main tools move, rotate and transform.

    keep it up!
