In today’s tutorial new author Zachary O’Conner will be showing us how to create a glass effect in Cinema4D, using a method of rendering typically used for interiors to give it a nice finished look. In this particular tutorial we’ll use some text in a basic room to show off the effect, yet it can really be used on anything at all. The lighting is really quite simple to setup, as this tutorial is aimed at the beginner crowd.
Every few weeks, we revisit some of our reader's favorite posts from throughout the history of the site. This tutorial was first published in June of 2011.
After modeling, lighting and rendering the scene in Cinema 4D, we’ll jump in to Photoshop (any version will do) and do some minor post work to give the final product a little bit of kick. I should also note that the render times of the work we do in Cinema 4D will be significant, especially if rendering at a high resolution. Hope you enjoy!

THNXXX DUDEEEE GREAT TUT :D
Very first time being FIRST!!!! :P
really nice effects, c4d looks like a easy app to learn, thanks
this is a great tutorial!! thank you very much! and btw, you are so young!!
Excellent stuff.
I’m still new to C4D and finding lighting and shadows the hardest nut to crack. This helped no end.
Impressive presentation as well – especially from a first time author. He’s obviously done his homework.
Thanks :)
Great tutorial Zachary. I learned quite a few tricks (your fill-light + GI setup is wicked). Thanks very much for sharing.
Good Tutorial. I am having issues opening the C4D file from the premium content. I’m using version 11.
Unfortunately Cinema 4D isn’t backwards compatible. As I use Version 12, you will only be able to open the scene file in version 12. Sorry about that.
pretty cool effect
you seem to know what you’re doing
ive been trying at this program, also vue and some other 3d programs and i havent quite got the hang of them to the level which you have (im also 18) but hopefully will get it soon ha :D
anyway good tut
Very nice tutorial and very informative, however, It was sort of hard to keep up with what you were saying ’cause you were sort of talking fast, and it was extremely difficult to see your screen even in Fullscreen. :(
Oh-well, great tutorial, thanks a bunch.
Great tutorial, love the text material :)
Nice tut I also added caustics but im waiting on the render to see how it looks
Post a render when it’s finished, I’d love to see how it comes out.
For a more realistic glass you can just use the transparency, no need for the reflection/specular.
Set the refraction to 1.51, add a fresnel, click the fresnel image, turn on physical and invert buttons, then change the preset to Glass.
For the colour of the glass use the Absorption colour and set the distance to the thickness you’ve made your model.
Done
1.51 is the refraction of standard glass not 1.2.
