Tutorial Details
  • Software: Luxology Modo
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Estimated Completion Time: 2 Hours
This entry is part 8 of 9 in the Best Of Modo Session
« PreviousNext »
This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Photorealistic Ipod in Modo

In this two part video tutorial, you will learn how to model, texture and render an iPod Nano 1st Gen in Modo 401. The techniques used here will be strictly poly modeling, and can therefore be applied to other 3D packages as well. The focus will be on the modeling and the texturing aspect, while the rendering process will be fairly simple in comparison to professional level renders.

On Day 1 of the tutorial we will be setting up the blueprints of the iPod, and begin the modeling process.

I have no idea man. I think it has something to do with the problem with the videos, as you may notice, the introductory video now skips right to the end. Its an issue BipTV is working on.

ghanem, i suggest you wait for BlipTV to fix the problem with the videos. Me and Kaleb fixed the problem on our side now its Blip’s turn. We hope it will get fixed soon and you all can enjoy the videos. Stay tuned for Day 2!

    Cheers,
    Justin

Okay so now, apparently, the videos work for me, apart from the introduction video, which skips right to the end. But the other 2 work just fine…

  • Felipe

    Where is the reference file??
    tks

Hey Felipe, try the-blueprints(dot)com i’m sure you can find the refferences there, although i’m not sure i can remember where i got mine from :S lol

can you explain a little bit more what you do when you use edge beve i tried and i don’t get the same result.

  • codec

can you explain a little bit more the step where you do the edge bevel at the very beginning i can’t do the same thing. Thanks

Codec – i’m not sure what you mean, and which edge bevel?

#Note beveling is easy, you just select the edges you want to bevel, you either go to the panel and select BEVEL either you hit B on your keyboard and that activates the bevel tool. The red handle is the “inset” of the bevel and the blue handle is the “shift” of the bevel.

If anyone has any requests, of what type of tutorials (Modo) they wish to see on cgtuts+ please feel free to comment!

    Cheers,
    Justin

Thanks for your answer. about you answer when i activated the edge bevel tool i had only one handle (the blue one) (handles are like gizmos ? english is not my natural language, sorry for that)
So, i retry and i don’t succeed. at 6:20 : i don’t understand how you can follow the shape of the corner i just can change the value of the inset but it don’t follow the corner’s shape’s blueprint. can you explain in detail what edge you select and what key you press and what value you use.
really sorry for that but you tuto looks nice and i appreciate to do it completely.

I am having exactly the same problem. When I use the bevel tool, I have no options to change where the bevel starts and ends between the edges. So it does not follow the shape of the iPod reference image. After selecting the 4 side edges, I hit “B” on the keyboard. All that shows up is the blue handle, there is no red handle. Is this a problem in 501? What action center should we be working in? This would be fun if I could get it to work right. I don’t want to have to manually move each edge, or every couple to get this right, does anyone have any thoughts on this problem?

“The red handle is the “inset” of the bevel and the blue handle is the “shift” of the bevel.” – Justin

In other words, the comment I quoted by Justin is incorrect for us who have this problem. There is no red inset handle.

thanks for that Awesome work you do Justin, it’s helping a lot of people, that like me have been trying to learn but there’s always something that obvious that is kind of hidden… one of those things is the “strings” you seem to keep all tighten up, i thought that 3D applications where a little less Physical in that sense, howcome and why do you have to tie everything up, why is there a ‘smoothing’ view and does that work the same in most 3D apps? thanks again Justin!

A few suggestions for your next tutorial Justin. Map it out in a little more detail to start. Watching you fumble around with features you don’t entirely grasp is not good for anyone (example: Trying to output a depth buffer). A little editing would be nice too. Do we really need to see the Modo crashes and popups from other software doing who knows what in the BG. I do appreciate the effort you put into creating the tutorial, but it honestly could use a bit more polish. Oh, and have a glass of water next to the computer next time…. ;)

  • NeoNe

hey from where I can get blueprints of ipod for this tutorial?

  • G4D

I really wish that there were some hard surface tutorials, that focused on keeping quad geometry. Teaching people to model the right way would be beneficial to everyone.
