Blender 2.5 alpha was released a month ago, and this first testing release of the 2.5 series comes packed with lots of improvements and changes. Obviously, since this is an alpha release, there are some missing or incomplete features, but development has continued alongside the Durian project, and already a lot of new features have been added. One of these new features is Indirect Diffuse Lighting for Aproximate Ambient Occlusion.
In this tutorial, and, after a brief introduction to the new interface and locations of different features, we’ll build a small scene and light it with AAO and indirect lighting.

Blender rocks
@Roberto Roch
Thank you for doing a lighting Tut
A lot of good work comes out of blender but suffer bad from final renders.
Any how thanks for making this and other Blender tuts the community needs top quality tuts like this. Also thanks to Net tuts.
Hiya Roberto
Thank you.
Nice one. Clear voice. Concepts clearly explained. Good pacing.
Keep it up.
Oh, and congratulations on being the first to have a Blender 2.5 Tutorial on CGTuts++
Great tutorial for the new Blender 5.0
I am surprised by all the positive comments. After 3 minutes I had to stop because the comment stops after every second word and often a AHHH… in it, really bad way to present a tutorial. Next time please write it beforehand and read it or at least cut out the AHHHS.
really blender 2.5 interface is awesome !
thanks for your nice toturial Roberto ..
Pliz, change the flv player. The stream its too slow!
In the “Ambient Occlusion” menu i don’t have the “indirect” and “bounce” choice…. :(
Thanks a lot for the sweet tut
@ Manubuntu
I don’t have any choice for “indirect” and “bounce” either! :(
Using “blender-2.5-alpha0-OSX-10.5-x86_64″
Why are these settings not showing up under “World -> Ambient Occlusion -> Influence”?
Ok, I get it now. You need to have a newer build of Blender than the official 2.5-alpha0.
I tried today’s (2010-01-11) build “Blender 2.5 OSX 10.4+ Intel 64bit r25893″ and it worked fine.

Autors of any blender tutorial should clearly state which version they use! Especially when using non official nightly builds.
I use only the official from Blender.org … I don’t understand nighty builds…
Thanks…
@ Manubuntu
Thanks for your reply!
Now that’s strange.
The only explanation for this is, that the feature-set of the official 2.5a0 release for the various platforms (i.e. Windows, Unix, MacOSX) is different? … very confusing! :(
Can someone verify that this is indeed the case here?
heya there:)
great tutorial once again, really enjoy every one of your tutorials..tho i got bit late with checking them out lately..anyhow thanks for all the effort and skill that u put into blenducation.
best regards
@it’s a mario
i just read today that there are still some know issues with the 64bit version of 2.5, for instance that it doesnt take full advantage of the 64bits architecture yet, (i can’t find the link where it was …could have been mfoxdogg’S blender labrat blog)
i guess thats why some of the versions behave a bit different .mac version for instance doesn’t come with FFMGP as the official release and so on…
so in case you stumble on such issues u stil have the option to download and unzip a different version of blender, since it runs right out of the box u just have to put in a folder of your choice and u can try the version wich suits u the best…its almost no fuss and u keep flexible in terms of special features etc.
good luck blendering
nice tutorial, but ya gotta write it down first to get a more fluently speech and have to fasten up some of the things like waiting for the render to become completed…
but its easier to complain about things than to get them done, so…i like it ;)
Thanks alot for this tutorial!
Very useful, a good introduction to the new alpha version of blender. At some parts I found it hard to tell what you were saying due to your accent but overall well presented and useful.
A fantastic tutorial and you had a great overview of blender 2.5 I do however have on question, at a few points in the video you selected the middle vertices and you then pressed a button to select the next ring of vertices after it. Please explain how you did that as it would be very useful to know.
Nice tut
Thanks for this.
I hope you developpe other tuts like this one.
It shows how strong Blender is.
And thank for foreign poeple (I’m), You speak slowly and I have the time to focuse my attention only on your tut.
Danbo
man, if u would talk a bit faster YOU WOULD BE INTERESTING
NOW YOU ARE NOT
Great job Roberto, tutorial not perfect, but i admire people making video tut, again good job keep it this way
just great…
thanks for you…
I lake it..
great tutorial, just pick up the pace :)
Awesome tut, I like the pace, my english its nto so good, and so I can hear while working on blender, without having to switch to stop/play the video, really usefull keep the tuts coming! ( oh and stating the blender v. youre using would clear some doubts, speccially when tuts get old )
Hey, the buffering rate on the video is ridiculously slow.. infact.. I am gonna see if I can’t reup the video and post a link for all of you having the same trouble.
Hi Hazzy,
I’ve just checked the tutorial and for me personally it buffers great – in fact the whole thing loaded in about 3 minutes! Are you having a similar issue with any other videos? I’d appreciate it if you could refrain from re-uploading however, as our agreement with all our authors are for their tutorials to be exclusive to Cgtuts+.
Thanks,
Matt
Is very very good, I’m learning more, thank you very much!!
Brazil / MA – yeah!!!!!
GO ahead blender>>>>>>>
That………….was too……………………….spaced……………………………..out…………………….
Seriously, speak with confidence and make your tutorials more “interesting”
I’ve had a problem with applying materials. When I’m trying to assign the two materials, light and mirror, light is always assigned to the whole model, and mirror is always assigned to nothing. I throughly did absolutely everything you did, and I still have this problem. I keep trying to only select the section of the lamp that lights up and pressing assign, but whenever I press select on the light material it selects the whole model of the lamp.
im using 2.56 and this is my first try at it and for some reason my sky is white ??? everything else worked great what im i doing wrong? any ideas
nevermind my comment!!!!
Hello everyone.
Yesterday I paid to become a premium member of CgTuts. Looks to be a professional alternative to other tutorials. I had to bump my Blender 2:56 expertise in lighting. Therefore, I went through the tutorial “CreateSomeCoolEffectsWithinderectLightningin Blender 2:56″ I got stuck when he zoomed in the camera. How did he do it.
Can you tell me
Thanks a lot.
Spender.
