Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+. Today we’re taking a look back at Jonathan Williamson’s awesome tutorial on Character Modeling in Blender. This tutorial received a great response when it was originally published back in march of 2010, so if you missed it the first time, why not check it out now.

Character modeling can be a daunting field to get into. Developing a solid character with good design and proper topology takes a lot of work. This tutorial provides an introduction to the many aspects involved with modeling a character in Blender for beginner artists.

Topics covered in this tutorial include:

  • Transform basics
  • Extruding
  • Mirror modifiers
  • Setting background images
  • Dividing the workspace
  • Topology

      Hello everyone,

      I’m having a bit of a problem.
      I’m using version 2.57b.

When a grab vertices and move them, other vertices that aren’t selected move a little bit, kind of like they are being dragged along. Kind of hard to explain.

Also, when I go to scale at the 16:12 mark, other vertices that aren’t selected move with it just a tiny bit but also messing up my model. Is there a setting that I have checked somewhere that is causing this?

      Thank you in advance :)

      • LostIn3DSpace says:

You probably have Proportional editing turned on. Press ‘O’ (the letter, not the number) and see if that solves the problem.

        Happy blending!

    2. Zeke says:

If only this tutorial was in Blender 2.57 but, it’s still real good.

      • Maia says:

Anything that isn’t the same in Blender 2.5 can be looked up on google in a couple seconds. I followed along this tutorial in 2.5 and with a little help from google and clicking around had no problems.

    3. David says:

    5. Houston says:

would someone please explain or post a link to a video explaining how to get my ui to look like his? mine is rather different and I don’t have the same tool bars as him and did figure out how to import the bg img but it would be nice to not have to go searching google anytime he uses something on that first toolbar on the bottom. any help is appreciated ty.

    8. Frankie says:

I’ve just started watching it, but so far, this is the best tutorial I have EVER seen. I watch a lot of tutorials, and make my own as well. Still none of the beat this.

      Amazing job, and thanks.

    9. robeomega says:

Oh great when I try and play it. It has a quicktime logo over it which means its not working for some reason then ive downloaded the file twice and still cant find where it is saving it :(

    10. zuleca says:

what type of blender do you use? i have 2.62 and tryed it but it doesnt work?

    11. Is there any simple tutorial for character clothing?

    12. Phil Rogers says:

I’m using 2.61 and the UI is completely different. I’m a beginner and I’m not familiar with all the tools. After watching this video I was hoping that I’d be able to run through it again and follow along.
It’s not possible though because I can’t find most of the controls that are used.
I guess I’ll have to come back when I’ve learned where everything is.

    13. dave says:

      omg me too :O

    14. Kenny says:

Think I found the problem ;)

Hold ‘B’-button until you see the selection lines. Then select the part you want to select, but you have to be for instance on the front side (press 1) or left side (press 3). Normally you should be able to grab everything at once, without parts that are left behind. =]
