Final Product What You'll Be Creating
Hard surface subdivision modeling can be a difficult concept to understand, however as it has become such a big part of today’s production environment, learning it has become much more of a necessity. Using the basic polygonal toolset, this 2-day, narrated timelapse tutorial covers the process of modeling a Luger P08, and is a great introduction to a standard SDS workflow in Maya.

Cheers for the tut Sebastian, It is nice to see more and more Maya tuts on cgTuts.
Hope there is more to come in the near future
i wish you can make a max version
lately we have not seen an advanced modelin tuts for 3ds max like we used too
especially when it comes to the fact max have a ton of new modelin tools we want to see when to use it n how to use it in the proper way
This is one of the times that you look over the tutorial and you use what you know to apply it in the application you use. Most studios that I have worked for use both max and maya along with proprietary plugins and modeling or animation-only rigs. Both software packages have close to the same tools and really it only matters how thing are set in there pipeline.
There is no reason you should not be able to follow along with any tutorial for any app and not be able to recreate the same object/idea. as the tools have become more powerful all the software has moved more toward the center to help people transition between them. something that has become increasing common at places like bungie and turn 10 so on and so forth.
This we need more max we need more maya thing is getting really old. Im sure if you go over all the tutorials that have been posted here you will understand how to do everything that will come up in another tutorial for another software package.
Sorry to go on about this but it seems that this is a huge point for people and they don’t seem to understand how little it matters in the real world.
I’m not a newbie to tell me that you can translated to another packages
i’m talking about tools have been recently implemented into max so that you can have your work done faster n more efficient
n talking about studios most of hard-surface modeling process go through max n for details zbrush right?
thanks again n hope you guys do the right way
Hey Kai/Snot!
Regardless of the age-old Max vs Maya debate, rest assured there are more Max AND Maya tutorials on the way
Although as Snot has pointed out, I’d like to think that the Max people don’t see a Maya tutorial and consider it irrelevant, or vice-versa. The concepts and techniques involved here are really applicable across a wide-range of applications. Saying that, the latest more app-specific tools would require a more specific tutorial (as Kai has mentioned above) and we should hopefully have some of those for you soon!
Thanks!
Matt
thanks matt
I just wanted to weigh in as a May guy and say that I am very happy to see more Maya tuts on here though I would add that I have learned a lot from the Max tutorials as well. Ultimately we are looking for the general modeling techniques and workflows that we can translate to whatever app is out there with reference to our manuals. I do understand the longing for highly specific tutorials that are focused on using some of the awesome tools found only in Maya.
One word of advice, shut down skype while recording.
Kai i disagree
We need more maya tutorials because, we have so much max tuts.
Yeah, maya the best, thanks bro
no wonder ur youtube channel quite dead lately
u r here!
Awesome, more Maya!!!
Glad you liked it Alex! More on the way…
Matt
goooooooooooooooooooood but pllllllllllzzzzz more tutorials for maya
Finally a tut using one of the strongest points of Maya!
Can you explain on how you were getting the results for those small circles on the gun being “inset” faked? I tried to follow along but it was just too fast for me. I think that it is an amazing trick and would love to know how to do it properly!
Hey i wonder why the whole modelling isn’t shown? A part of the handle is already made in the tutorial. I don’t understand this completely. Isn’t tutorial suposed to be shown from the scratch? Or am I missing sth?
Anyway, great videos =)
Hi Luka,
Glad you liked it! The handle you see at the start of the first video is given in the RefFiles.zip linked at the top of the tutorial.
Thanks!
Matt
Dude…video 1…I have no clue what you are saying. You are just going on and on. I really enjoy what you are doing, but you’re going 900 miles and hour and your sentences are not cohesive.
great…more Maya tuts …please
Hello, I’m using Maya 2009, and it can’t open the initial file. The output says that the file structure is corrupted.
Also, I noticed that when you were working on one half of the model, the other half was automatically updated in real time. How did you do that? (I usually work on one half, then mirror it at the very end)
Great tutorial!
Andrei
thanks for going in fast forward, no idea what you’re doing
