This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Learning Autodesk Maya

If you’ve always wanted to dive into Autodesk Maya but didn’t know where to start, this new two part tutorial is for you! Besides being one of the premier software packages on the market for film, games and VFX. Maya’s seemly endless number of tools, features, and options make it extremely intimidating to learn (especially for beginners) but don’t let that stop you! Today we’re kicking off part one of Shaun Keenan’s new beginner friendly tutorial series, where he’ll take you deep into the dark depths of Maya and give you an in-depth look at many of the programs awesome features.

Shaun will start by introducing you to Maya’s UI, Shelves and Navigation, where you’ll learn how to move around inside the program, what tools are where and and how those tools work. From there Shaun will introduce you to Maya’s modeling and UVMapping tools and finish things up by taking at look at Hypershade, Maya’s material editor.

In the next part of the tutorial, you’ll take what you’ve learned so far and apply it to create an awesome stop watch model!

i’m very sorry to have to post this, but parts 1-5 (the ones released at the time of my posting) are almost completely useless. doesn’t anyone check the quality of these tuts before they are posted? the guy may know very well how to use maya, but passing on his knowledge is a completely different matter in which he unfortunately fails across the board. the concept is already flawed with him going over many maya functions unrelated to any specific task, mostly wasting time listing them and virtually guaranteeing close to zero retention of the subject matter (this is so basic tut concepting a specialized tut site really shouldn’t mess it up so badly). this concept would turn out bad even with a perfect execution, but coupled with a bad one it makes for an, as i said, useless tut. what makes it a bad execution? the guy sounds bored (can’t really blame him for that as the concept makes this unavoidable), he adds very little to what anyone can see and do himself, mostly saying just “as you can see”, he wanders off into areas he’s not comfortable with, then dismisses them with an awkward smile and a “too complex” label (these areas indeed aren’t suitable for beginners, but don’t wander into them wasting everyone’s time and diminishing your credibility). one other bigger issue is erroneously assumed knowledge of the audience, which is especially obvious in the uvmapping part where to know what’s going on, you must already know more that the tut can teach you.

hopefully i haven’t offended anyone, i’d just like to see better tuts as it’s a pain to watch something like this, knowing the guy put some time and effort into it, but ended up with just a time waster for most everyone involved.

As someone with little to no knowledge of Maya – this was completely, thoroughly, incomprehensible to me.
