Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 1 of 7 in the series Create A Stylized Car In Maya

Today we’re launching an exciting new tutorial series focused on stylized vehicle creation in Maya. In this massive, multi-part tutorial, you’ll follow professional CG artist Shaun Keenan of MZP Studios, as he walks you through the entire process of creating a high-end, production quality stylized car from scratch using Maya.

Through out the series you’ll gain valuable insights into the tools and techniques used by professional artists, while working your way to a fully realized model. In later lessons you’ll learn how to add detail and construct the car’s interior. A topic rarely covered in car modeling tutorials. Whether you’re a beginner creating your first car, or an experienced artist just looking to brush up, this series is a must watch.

In part one, you’ll start blocking out the car body. Shaun will explain the importance of creating proper topology even at this early stage. An important step which will later save time and make separating the model into sections that much easier. You also learn how Zbrush can be used to quickly fix mesh errors and finally how to build the car’s wheel wells, front grill and bumpers.

    I’m 3ds max user.
I like this tutorial, because this model is not so typical realistic as many others. It gives me a lot of fun to do some rehearsals for such comic results as we can already see.
    Thank you for your post.

@brandon…looks like the “red blob” you are talking about is at least a center pivot script? Not sure, but I agree, I would like to know exactly what some of the mel/python scripts Shaun is using in his custom shelf. Especially that inset tool. That’s nice.

The Red Blob your talking about is a mel script that shortens center pivot, clear history and freeze transformations of any selected object .Just a simple 3 line script .To bring shortcuts into the shelf all you need to do is select a tool with ctrl+alt held down .

hey Shaun this tutorial series is awesome, thanks for sharing your know how on good modelling practice.

my one question is where did you get the inset faces(instead of extrude) mel script(if it is a script) ? it seems to be a smoother way of extruding holes in the mesh. lol

The inset tool is and should be on creativecrash or which used to be highend3d.com

  • johnRock

hey dude, I just started this tut and I find really usefull that inset script.
I already went to creativecrash to try get it, but it seems there is no longer there, I even found some links by googling it but there is always a message saying that it couldn’t find the script ( this in creativecrash.com).
I (and I bet a lot more people) would be really apreciated if you could share the script here or sending it by email.

    Cheers John

Awesome tutorial Keenan, but you should do something about your presentation and teaching style. Dull, drowsy, breathing too much into the mic ;and makes me want to just lie down and sleep :P Your material is great but it’s like your being forced to do it :/
