When it comes to making sales, the package is just as important as the product. The same can be said in the world of CG, except package is your portfolio…and the product is you! In this two part tutorial series, professional 3d Environment Artist, Kaleb Aylsworth, will show you a quick and easy, but highly effective process for lighting, rendering, and eventually presenting your 3d game art for you portfolio.

On Day 1, we will explore the process of setting up a camera, and a simple, yet effective 3 point lighting rig. Then, after we have achieved a desired result, we will set up raytraced shadows, in conjunction with the light tracer plugin, antialiasing filters, and global supersampling, to get a refined and high quality final render. We will also go over how to create a clay and wireframe render to properly show off our optimized models.

On Day 2, we will bring the renders into photoshop, and combine them our texture sheets, as well as some eye catching graphics and text, to complete the final presentation piece.

Note: This is not a modeling or texturing tutorial. In order to complete it you must already have a finished piece of game art, complete with current industry standard texture maps.

I created this piece quite a while ago, so I don’t know if I could remember it enough to make that happen, but I can tell you that there is a huge modeling and texturing workflow tutorial collaboration coming up that involves myself and another CGTuts+ favorite author…so just stay tuned my friend:)

I’m terribly sorry for the delay in getting the second part of this tut finished. My company has been crunching for the last six weeks on a huge production milestone for our current project, and between that and the duties involved with editing and maintaining a level of awesomeness on this site, I just haven’t been able to get around to it. I promise I will get it posted asap in the new year!

dose any one know how to transfer a rigged hi-poly to that of a low-poly model.??/
i tried using projection modifiers etc but no luck/..
any help is greatly appreciated .

  • Chris Varnz

Kaleb, did you render the UVW to a texture and then paint the texture onto that in photoshop, or did you paint the texture first and then map it to the model? I’ve been modelling for a little under 6 months so I’m kind of going by example at the moment. I cant wait for the tutorial vids you mentioned above concerning this topic!

Keep up the great work, I’d definately pay for this standard of tutorial.

I know it’s been asked before, but it’s been a while – any update on when part 2 is coming? I’d really love to watch. :)

  • Linkitch

I’m curious why the actual Material of the object wasn’t covered in the tutorial at all. We only get a very quick glimpse of it at around the 30:32 mark.

What kind of material are you using in the bump slot? It says Normal Bump, what what exactly is that?

  • Ben

Awsome tut but where is the 2nd part??

  • Graham

Will we see the 2nd part, Hope you can find the time to do it.
