Achieving Realistic Depth Of Field In 3D Studio Max & After Effects

Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Depth Of Field is essential to add believability and realism to any 3d render. In this tutorial Chandan Kumar will explain how to achieve in camera DOF in 3d studio max, and how to improve quality and control focus using the camera’s target distance.

This effect can work nicely, but if you want greater control. The use of a Z-Depth pass and post production software such as After Effects, gives you the ability to change an image’s focus without the need to re-render. In the second half of the tutorial we’ll move into After Effects where you’ll learn how Z-Depth can be used to control Depth of Field using AE’s Lens Blur Options and the benefits of doing this in post production.

    Very useful tutorial – thanks

Final effect is just bad. Sure it shows animated DOF, but why not make it at least a little bit more prettier?

@Formalin- I think you should watch the tutorial not just the output. Writing “final effect is just bad” just reflects that it has come from some arrogant, disturbed , frustrated and retard person who is just not able to digest anything good! I think you should vomit on regular basis so that it cleanses your abdomen!

Final effect is as important as tutorial, I’m sure that a lot of people will agree with me. It’s always good to see something nice, and there were many nice tutorials back then – before new editors (not only current). No offense, but I think this site needs more careful approach to the quality of the content.

@Formalin – no we dont agree with you, tutorials are to show a way to do things, they are not created to look pretty. if a person tells u how to cross the road he just needs to tell u how to do it, how u improvise is your choice, m sure we’ll be seeing a prettier version of this tutorial by u soon enough… lol

and well Chandan has a lotta tutorials here and they really help…

the final effect was bad it seems…

Thanx for the tutorial but why not making some good quality HD videos???

    • http://www.vfxrider.com Chandan Kumar

Thanks Dot! I make tutorials on a 4:3 square shaped monitor so it not really possible to generate a 16:9 HD video. Also this format comes handy in terms of “low size” and its easy for everybody to download it quickly!
