Creating The iPhone 4S In 3D Studio Max, Part 2

Creating The iPhone 4S In 3D Studio Max, Part 2

Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 2 of 5 in the series Creating The Iphone 4S

In this multi-part project, we’ll be creating the iPhone 4S in 3d Studio Max using tried and true poly modeling techniques. You’ll learn how to setup and model from six view blueprints, create precision cuts and holes, terminate edge loops and how to add proper supporting geometry to retain surface shape when adding subdivision.

We’ll be aiming to cram as much detail as possible into the model, while creating the cleanest mesh we can. The overall goal of the project will be to create a model capable of standing up to even the closest renders.

Hi Ben, I like your tut really much. I`m building the iphone myself by folowing your tut.

It would be even better if you model the device with the exact messurements, or at least with the exact proportions. There is tons of blueprints of iphone4s that are showing the correct ones. Let me show you one – http://thatdarkkidkevin.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/picture-32.png

I think that it would be really nice if you do not eyeball something, when you have the correct blueprint. It`s what pro`s do. And you are a pro.

    Cheers,
    V

      Thanks Valdes,

Originally I did plan to do the phone using exact dimensions, and actually started recording the tutorial using the exact same blueprint image you linked to ;)

I spend a good portion of time in Photoshop trying to clean it up, but unfortunately quickly realized it just wasn’t going to hold up once I had it in the 3ds Max viewports. And with the compression on the videos it would have been even worse.

I ended up thinking it would add a significant amount of difficulty to the tutorial to do it to absolute scale. So I decided to abandon that idea and just go with images and approximate the size and proportions. Unfortunately not an exact replica, but hopefully the modeling workflow used will help people out if they do in fact choose to do a model in the future using exact scale :)

      Thanks again,
      Cheers!
      Ben
