Creating The iPhone 4S In 3D Studio Max, Part 1

Creating The iPhone 4S In 3D Studio Max, Part 1

Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 1 of 5 in the series Creating The Iphone 4S

In this new multi-part project, we’ll be creating the iPhone 4S in 3d Studio Max using tried and true poly modeling techniques. You’ll learn how to setup and model from six view blueprints, create precision cuts and holes, terminate edge loops and how to add proper supporting geometry to retain surface shape when adding subdivision.

We’ll be aiming to cram as much detail as possible into the model, while creating the cleanest mesh we can. The overall goal of the project will be to create a model capable of standing up to even the closest renders.

      Thanks Nagesh!!

Regarding the videos, yes we switched over to Youtube a couple of weeks ago. So everything will be streaming off there from here on out. Should be much more stable and a better option then Blip ever was (which was quite frankly a piece of junk!)

      Cheers,

    Hi this’ me again.
I’m still waiting for your tutorial on UV ing and texturing the truck.

    • Matthew

      Hey Tioual

I dont think he plans on doing on UVing and Texturing the truck because that tutorial was just a modelling tutorial, not an entire process. :)

      • Tioual Saeed

        :( :(.
I taught I heard in the tutorial that “it was a part of series of modelling Uving and texturing semi truck ” anyway, sorry If I miss understood (English isn’t my mother tang).
Thank u men for the great work

      Hey Sai,

I’ve split the tutorial videos into two separate downloads (links at top of page,) to make things a little easier for everyone to download ;)

    Hi, Ben Tate,
I am from Ukraine and I really like your lessons, thank you for your trouble!

  • http://muraja.net Timo

Nice one! One of the best tutorials on cgtuts. When is the second part coming?

  • kenn peterson

Are there more parts to this tutorial? It says part 1 which implies more parts and it seems like the tutorial ends unfinished but the description says “This entry is part 1 of 1 in the series Creating The Iphone 4S” which implies that there is only the one part. Car modeling tutorial is the same wording. I’m confused and hoping there’s more coming for both.

      Hey Kenn,

Yup, there’s more parts coming soon for both tutorials. Part 2 of the iPhone 4S tutorial should be up by Friday, and the second part of the Car modeling tutorial will be available early next week ;)

      Cheers,
      Chris

I don’t get it, why go through all that trouble creating those lines, why not just simple use the boolean command to create gaps?

    • http://www.bentateonline.com Ben Tate
      Author

      Hey Rudolf,

Good question, I’d highly recommend never using booleans unless it’s absolutely necessary! While it’s faster and easier to create holes that way, it will most likely cause some serious issues with your mesh and the model’s topology.

I’m not saying never use it, you might be able to get away with it on lower res objects, but if you’ll be adding subdivision later on. Chances are you’ll end up with major smoothing errors caused by stray verts and n-gons. Which would take significantly longer to clean up, then it would to manually create good topology up front. It’ll save you some headaches and also make uvmapping much simpler, not too mention yield a much cleaner model overall!

      Cheers,
      Ben

Hey ben! awesome video you have there, can’t wait for your next iphone video, anyway i was wondering have you thought of making samsung galaxy s3 3d tutorial ? Because i seen quite a few iphone 3d tutorial but no doubt your’s the best, but lately samsung galaxy its quite an hot topic now, it would be god like if you have galaxy tutorial here as well.

  • Abbex

Ben,thanks U for all the effort on this tutorial , though am a new beginner but I love this tutorial very much and also switching to youtube is gonna make it a lot easy for viewers to get more of your stuffs than blip tv because it is too slow . Thanks once again .

Will there be more of this tutorial after part 4? Thanks for the tip on caution using the new Graphite Modelling tools. I thought it was just me! Great refresher on poly-modeling. Keep up the good work.

  • Seppo

I guess this tutorial can be used to model the iPhone5 too by using the Strech tool in the end?

  • Massimo Fazzolari

    Excellent Tutorial, Thank you!

  • Brendan

    Hi Ben,

Ran into a problem on the 2nd video on part 1, when you are making the hole for the sim tray.

My inset doesn’t turn out like yours and I can’t get it right!

    Heres the screenshot:

    Any ideas? it’s really frustrating.

    Thanks

    • Ben_Tate

      Hey Brendan,

Man that’s a strange one! Never really seen inset work in that way before. I immediately thought it might be cased by edge constraints being turned on, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. I tried to recreate the same edge flow you have in your screenshot, but wasn’t able to. So I really have no idea as to why it’s insetting uneven like that!

There’s a few things you can try to workaround it. Either manually adjust the verts inside the circle with the Move tool, to re-create the proper topology the inset should have given you.

Or you could try deleting the 12 polygons inside the circle. Then select the edges around the hole with a Border selection, hold down Shift and use the Scale tool to Extrude the border edges inward uniformly. It should basically create the same edge flow the inset would have given you, and if it works you should be able to continue on from there.

Sorry I can’t be of more help!
      Cheers,
      Ben

I know this is pretty old question but maybe someone else having the same problem and need the solution.

If you select your object and go under Utilities (the hammer icon to the right) and select “Reset XForm” and then the “Reset Selected” button. You can now go back to your modify panel and right click on the modifier stack and hit the Collapse All option and everything should work when you try to inset your polys ;)

Got the info from another forum.

  • nita

Can you make tutorials how to create lego star wars characters please!

  • james falsken

I love your tutorial on the iphone. There seems to be missing the tutorial for the bottom and glass face. Can you advise me on the missing video segments?

  • Mats Jonasson

Hi and thanks for a really well produced tutorial ;)

I have a question.. I’m trying to follow along but i’m using 3DS Max 2013 and i can’t get the opacity to animate from 100% to 25% on the box. I do EXACTLY as you do but i doesn’t work for some reason. I’m used to keyframes and animation in After Effects and i never had any problems to animate spinners.

It should work. Am i missing some setting in 3d studio? any button that i have to activate for animation to take effect or any setting that apply to animation properties and stuff like that?

I did the tutorial and changed the opacity manually but it was a pain :P just want to know this if i’m going deeper in to animation in 3ds max and then have to face this problem again..

    Thanks ;)

    • Mats Jonasson

Well, now i feel stupid ;) found the solution in the Key Filters setting just after asking here. I’ve missed one option in there because i mixed it up with another option in the animation settings.. I created the problem my self..
