Creating a Next-Gen Video Game Hot Rod: the Complete Workflow – Day 3

Ever wanted to know how the artists create those amazing cars for AAA video game titles? Well here’s your chance to find out. In this incredible CGTuts+ exclusive tutorial series, you will follow professional CG artist and teacher Laurens Corijn as he creates a high quality, next-gen, normal mapped Hot Rod for realtime use.

This tutorial is Day 3 in a series – Go to Day 1, Day 2, or Day 4

In the series’ biggest part yet, we’ll be diving straight into highpoly modeling with the most challenging part of the car, the gigantic, supercharged Hemi 540 engine and its transmission! Through this, you will learn that modeling something as complex as an engine is not an impossible task!

This tutorial can be followed as part of the larger series, but it can also be viewed as a standalone tutorial for creating an impressive highpoly engine block. It even includes a bonus video that explains how to make a nice render setup for this sort of highpoly mechanical work!!

Hah, I knew a gearhead was gonna come by and catch me on some of this stuff. I know a lot, but it’s more motorcycle engines and my technical terms are usually in dutch and french. Translating that can be tough at times!

      great work great……

      Hi,
Haven’t had chance to watch all the videos yet but jsut watched the bonus and i’ve gotta say a massive thank you, i always have troubles obtaining good renders and this has helped me loads!.

      Thanks mate

    29. Dawn says:

Very good tutorial. Just one little thing that bugged me was the overly excessive (and, Im sorry ‘boring’) technical explanations on how certain parts of the car/engine work, especially as I already knew most of these, and don’t feel that the information is needed to create the engine. It would have been much more useful to me (with it being a MAX tutorial) to have a little more explanation on some of the max functions that you were using and why.

    30. Dennis says:

I just stumbled upon this tutorial, and I must say, I have never been more pleased with a complete start to finish tutorial. This is seriously going to help my workflow, and further my skills in the game development side of 3ds Max. Thanks for making this free, and thanks for making such a high quality tutorial, Lauren.
