Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+. Today we have an awesome 3D Studio Max tutorial by Laurens Corijn covering the complete workflow for creating a next gen video game hot rod. The start of this amazing 9 day tutorial series was first published back in January of 2010 and proved to be incredibly popular with our Max users! Let’s take a look back…

Ever wanted to know how the artists create those amazing cars for AAA video game titles? Well here’s your chance to find out. In this incredible CGTuts+ exclusive tutorial series, you will follow professional CG artist and teacher Laurens Corijn as he creates a high quality, next-gen, normal mapped Hot Rod for realtime use.

In this first part of the series, Laurens takes you through the first planning and design steps, such as gathering inspiration, collecting reference, and fleshing out the idea, and then demonstrates how to get started with the first rough blockout of the model.

This tutorial is Day 1 in a series – Go to Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8 or Day 9.

First of all, your English is quite good so it isn’t a horror just listening to you talk about what you are doing etc.

The workflow is fast and you try to do it quickly without talking too much about what the tools are used for while using them and I like that since I’m not really a Beginner to this app.

I thank you for this and I’m looking forward to the next part of this tutorial.

      Cheers!

May I write a Article about this Tutorial on my Blog and use your Final Effect Preview Picture for that?

The image is the property of Laurens and CGTuts+, so unfortunately you may not re-post the image on your blog. What you can do, however, is write about the tutorial, and then post a link to the tutorial (or tutorial image if you like).

Engine is way too large. But the engine in the final result isn’t like the one he makes in this part of the tut. So maybe there will come some changes later on in part 2.

    20. praveen says:

      sir……..u r grate………. and i expert more 4m U………..

    21. Author

Thanks for the good feedback everybody. Yes, I will talk about every process in its creation, don’t worry. And we’re aiming for a part every week, maybe a bit sooner.

Haqzaf and possible others following this tutorial: You shouldn’t try to follow me exactly. Collect your own reference (exteremely important) and use it. No two hot rods are ever alike, so try and design your own vehicle. Just experiment with proportions in this stage, it’s all just easy modeling now. You want to be satisfied with it by the next step.

    22. Junior says:

      Amazing tutorial! Big fan here!
      Regards from Brazil!

      • Staff

Sorry about that. The Day 2 link gets created when the Day 2 tutorial is uploaded to our server, but it will not work until the Day 2 tutorial is actually published. You can expect it to be working later in the week:)

I found this extremely helpful and want to thank the creator. I have recently started working with the UDK and kinda plan to piece together a driving/fps post-apocalyptic game while creating portfolio models and level design… its a tough task but i plan on really sticking it out to learn, improve etc.. the best part about this tutorial is that what i am working on will be using nearly identical vehicles just more rusty..rat rods more so than hot rods but there really isn’t much of a difference and i was really looking for some reference when i came across this tutorial there is a few other team members helping with the game and i know this tutorial will be extremely helpful so again thanks.. maybe when the first release of the game is done ill post a link here. So thank you so much again to the creator of the model i would love to have that book you have.. i dunno whether or not i want to shell out 50 bucks for it though and would love to have some of your reference pics if you are willing to share them.
