Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+, and today we have an amazing 3Ds Max post by Sachin Joshi. This tutorial was first published in March 2010 and provided a a great look at a very useful plugin – GQ:Ivy! Let’s take a look…

In this quick and easy tutorial, we will use 3ds Max, VRay, and a free plugin called GW:Ivy to create a highly detailed ivy covered tree stump scene. For those of you who are beginners out there…don’t be intimidated! When you are finished you will say “I can’t believe how easy that was!”.

I found that it possible to use gwIvy not only for plants, but also for some crazy things.

great tutorial . . . very beautiful one. . . but i got stock when i got to the creeping plants bcos my leaves were coming ad untextured black boxes . . . .. going through the comments section, i realised some people are have also been going through the same with no solution. . . i searched the internet and got no solution on it. . . anyways i decided to dedicate almost 16hrs to this and VOILA , i got the solution . . . here it is. . .

FOR THOSE WITH LEAVES COMING AS UNTEXTURED BLACK BOXES. . . all you have to do is when starting 3dstudio max, RUN AS AN ADMINISTRATOR. . . and the boxes would come as leaves. . VOILA!!! simple isnt it. . .

Going back to old tutorials is a nice way of saying “we dont have anything new for you”

    • Mathaeis says:

Honestly, it’s not like a magazine where people might not have access to the old stuff at any time. I appreciate the free content (probably a lot more than a lot of the other people that comment, whining endlessly), but there is a point where things are becoming at least slightly bleaker. Premium content, for instance, was not supposed to replace any content that non-premium users were already getting, but I’m pretty sure the last few Fridays haven’t had anything BUT the premium post (not to mention one of the recent video posts was free somewhere else?). So now we are down to 4 days a week, except twice a month where we get 3 days a week plus a recycled one?

Again, I realize a site needs money to continue thriving and all that, but if the content it drying up, what’s the point of anyone keeping up with it?

    • Rhino D'Octo says:

Oh come on… Awesome tutorials will always be awesome, maybe slightly outdated, but still awesome. And revisiting an old post is a good way for reminding of the great content here, on CG tuts.

      • Mathaeis says:

Sorry, I have an attention span and don’t mind clicking back through older posts when I’m looking for more information or potentially awesome tutorials. If this thing is so radical, why not just give it a permanent place on the front page of the site and never post anything new? Seriously – they can create a ‘best of’ section or something, there’s no reason to go back 24 times a year to old posts, especially when this site isn’t even that old.

I’m grateful for the free content, and when I have time to devote I would like to dive into the premium stuff, so it’s not like I don’t appreciate what’s here. But they have slacked off in what they promised (again, in their responses to people complaining about losing content because of premium, etc.) and haven’t held up what they originally said was going to go on.
