Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+, and today we have an amazing 3Ds Max post by Sachin Joshi. This tutorial was first published in March 2010 and provided a a great look at a very useful plugin – GQ:Ivy! Let’s take a look…

In this quick and easy tutorial, we will use 3ds Max, VRay, and a free plugin called GW:Ivy to create a highly detailed ivy covered tree stump scene. For those of you who are beginners out there…don’t be intimidated! When you are finished you will say “I can’t believe how easy that was!”.

can you elaborate your question, what do you mean by that black article!!!

  33. Danny says:

My leaves are untextured. How did you get your out of the box to look like leaves.

    • Sachin Joshi says:

      Well Danny,

If you Pick Material from object from the Material Editor, there you will see the textures in you material slot
. GW ivy comes with default texture image name “_ivy_d.tga” with the opacity map.
I hope this will help your problem.

      Cheers
      Sachin

  34. cliff says:

uhm… sorry… but am i the only one who has problems with the audio of this tutorial ?!
its sound intensity is way to low and if i make it louder i have this stupid noisy “peep” sound
i’d get headache if i were to watch the whole video

  38. sam says:

    hello…
    its me again…
i took the liberty to download this video and reduce the audio noise and make it a bit louder (the audio is now stereo too)
and thats the only thing i did to it so everything else is still the same
i hope its ok with you

here is the link to the modified video
    http://club-anime.de/3d/Cg-tuts-Create_an_Ivy_Covered_Tree_Stump_with_3ds_Max,Ivy_Gen_and_VRay.flv

  43. Brittany says:

I have studio max 2010. I’m trying to grow the vines, but they’re these black planes when I’m done growing? Why don’t the leaves become leaves when I’m done?

    • apg51sa says:

excellent work thank you very much

    • Ben says:

Umm….How do i download this plugin? i dont have a plugin folder? =[

    • John Bon says:

You have to run max as administrator by closing max if its open, right click run as administrator and reopen the file from within Max. Windows is retarded. Hopefully one day they will build Max on a stable operating system that works.

  44. Bart says:

    Great tutorial!

But i’ve got the same problem, no textures on the leaves just black planes, no extra material in the Material Editor.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers!

    • Sachin Joshi says:

      HI BART
I dont have any idea why your textures is missing, seems all fine to me, if you want the textures just pm me, i will send you the textures.
      Hope that will help you.

      with regards

      Sachin

      • Tazz says:

Great Tutorial man but I have encountered the same problem as Brittany

(I have studio max 2010. I’m trying to grow the vines, but they’re these black planes when I’m done growing? Why don’t the leaves become leaves when I’m done?

I just wan’t to know if you solved the problem & how coz I’ve looked all over the internet with no solutions.
If its not too much trouble could you please a email me the textures if you have them,I have found out its one of the missing items & also which folder do i put them in? my mail is lazzymusa@gmail.com

        Thanks in Advance man

        Tazz

  45. Bart says:

    Hi Sachin,

that would be perfect if U can send me the textures/materials to my email: bartoler1981@aim.com.

    Kind Regards
    Bart

  46. Bart says:

    Hi Sachin,

Thank You very much for ur help, really appreciate it!

but i’ve got one more problem, when using vray renderer, it renders but without the oppacity map (the leaf with green square background,
when render with mentalray, it works proper but without the tree obviously;)
propably i need to change some settings in vray?

    Kind Regards,
    Bart

  47. Hyippo says:
