Create an Interactive 3d Model Viewer using 3ds Max and Wirefusion
Tutorial Details
- Program: 3ds Max, Wirefusion
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Completion Time: 26 minutes
Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Cgtuts+, and today we have an awesome Maya particles tutorial by Benoit Staumont. This tutorial was first published in December 2009 and proved incredibly popular! Let’s take a look…
In this two part tutorial, you will learn how to create an energy drink can in 3ds Max using poly modeling and splines, and then export your mesh to Wirefusion and add a user interface wich will allow you to move, zoom and rotate your can in real time, and finally create a feature that will allow anyone to change the texture of the can from their own computer.
If you are someone who makes corporate style videos frequently, this will provide you with a much quicker and more exciting way to visually represent data, instead of a plain Powerpoint-style slide. If you are not, then you will be able to learn some of the powerful things that you can do with animation using Xpresso and Mograph in conjunction with Cinema 4d.

Ok I did what you said but I cannot get the Ambient Occlusion to work guess I can always just leave as it is and just make the gun without it I guess I could do that as plan b lol oh well thanks anyway
Don’t worry ;) Here is a little video to help you : http://www.overlutz.be/cgtuts/ambient_occlusion/
Good luck.
wow thank you I will try it later thanks may I ask where can I get .hdr from?
Hey Benoit
Do you think you can send me the video of
http://www.overlutz.be/cgtuts/ambient_occlusion/
as I would love to add this to my vas expanding video that I have collected could you do this it would be a great help?
Hi the video
http://www.overlutz.be/cgtuts/ambient_occlusion/
is way too big to view on my 50inches plasma that’s why I wanted to download it. But I do not know how to. Can you please send me the video through email?
It’s an .flv file. You can download it here : http://www.overlutz.be/cgtuts/ambient_occlusion/ao.flv
Hi I have tried it but it did not work you see the hdr not sure where to get it from and also my gun is pure black when I render it out don’t know why through I tried to reset the xform but it did not work
gracias, otro buen tutorial
thank you for this I never got the it to work but I did not need to uvw map the guns they look fine without it and I saved out the normal when exporting so that I did not have to smooth then in Wire fusion.
merci :)
First of all thank you Benoit for a fantastic tutorial!
I am very new to studio max, so bare with me :) I have a question for any one who can answer me:
When the “dimples” are created for the tab of the can, and then they are raised into position so they look like indents/recesses of the tab. From the top view they look like they are part of the tab, but when i zoom in from a side view, they are clearly above the can?
Have I made a mistake? Or is it supposed to be just an illusion that they are indents/recesses? As it looks good unless I really zoom in from the side
Thank you for your time in advance:)
Hey Don, I’m glad you liked the tutorial.
You’re right : using floating geometry is just a trick to give the illusion that the objects are merged together ;)
But of course, it works only because we dont have any shadow or ambient occlusion.
Thanks alot for replying Benoit :) for a moment I thought I was going crazy and that I had missed something crucial in your videos with these floating objects… hahaha, but now I can sleep again :D
Keep up the great work!
Hey Benoit,
great tutorial!! Loved to watch and definitely learned a lot!!
I have two questions concerning Wirefusion:
- Where can I get the Video Add-On you have??
- In the tutorial you show that it’s possible to make one part of the mesh (the shovel) move by clicking on it. Am I also able to make a video run/appear inside the presentation by clicking on a specific part of the mesh?? (In my presentation I want to show videos about some specific parts of my 3D-modell/mesh)
Thank you!!!!!
Ah btw, I’m using the trial version of wirefusion 5.0…. In case the add-on’s only available when you purchased WF…
Greetings
Uh i got a problem i made a reset button and when i click it it goes slow motion back to its reset position?
Whatdid i do wrong?
Please help
Hi,
To disable this effect, turn off the “enable” checkbox under the “Camera Animation” tab.
Play the tutorial at Part 2 – 20:15 to see this checkbox.
Hi Ben,
this is one of the best tutorial here in cg tuts.
do you have other uploader rather than flash some like simple php that dont need plugins? is the change texture possible on more complex UV mapping? like this kind of mapping?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/219/jadeinfotodruckseite.jpg
thank you
Hi Jim and thank you for you nice comment.
I don’t have another uploader but I’m sure you can find plenty of tutorials that explain how to make it.
You can of course change the texture on more complex unwrapped models as long as your UV’s do not overlap and fit in the UV’s square.
Hi Benoit,
Yeah, the tutorial is really nice. Helped me a lot some time ago with a simple presentation. I was trying to do a more complex one with an unwrapped model of a building, but when I load it into Wirefusion it does not wrap the texture, just applies it onto the model as if with a box mapping. I put the map simply into the diffuse slot hoping it remembered the uvs, but apparently I am doing something wrong. Could you help me with that, plz?
Thanks
Hi
I have 2 question please answer to me:
1. What properties needed when export the mesh to have a seperate animation in the Animations section?
like this:
http://micro-learn.persiangig.com/image/SeprateAnim.jpg
And this is my Sequence:
http://micro-learn.persiangig.com/image/CombineAnim.jpg
2.How Can run an animation in the two step(Clicking twice on the mesh an run the animation for example from 1-25 frames and in the second click run the animation from 25-50)?
Thanks.
