This is a superb video for teaching workflow and techniques for basic modeling. There’s some incredible time-saving ideas. I’d call this a must-watch for beginners like myself. Good job!

Usually I just watch these “beginner” tuts to see if they there maybe is some small detail that I haven’t noticed before, cause there are so many ways to make something and everyone has a different workflow when working.

Although this is a useful workflow for beginners I never work like this. I prefer working on one area and being done before moving on when working on a project like this. But as everyone knows, there is no right or wrong way when working with this. You can achieve the same result in so many ways.

I’m sure there are many thankful for this. I was interested in seeing yet another workflow, although I prefer my own now that I’m so used to it anyway :)

I hope to see something more advanced later on, Mr. Brainard :)

  7. Hey great Basic Tut, I still need to transfer the little I know of maya into 3ds max, this is a great introductory resource to help out on that too. (p.s A tutorial on the transfering terms on modeling from Maya to 3ds max would be great. Ex: MAya uses merge Vertices, Max uses Weld vertices. well there are plenty of charts online, but not in video format. (as for as I know)

    thanks for your job, Mike
it’s very good, to learn how to manipulate the tools of 3DS MAX,
in a short time,it’s more easy like this, with a video tuto, there’s so many tools
in,that’s very very well, but, after for animation, it’s not the same, that could
be take a long time, have you the suite for animation?
    thanks again.

  14. Mark says:

    Hi Mike,

Because of a very low speed internet connection I’ve got here I can’t neither download nor watch this tutorial. I read the comments and really feel down cause I coudn’t check it out.

Could you please re-make it with text and photos?
Wider audiences would benefit from that, I’m sure.

Best regards and many thanks in advance

Having trouble with this tutorial, could someone explain how you are supposed to create objects without spreading them against the grid then raising them along the Y axis to make the object? In this video it shows him creating objects in front view, I cannot pull this off.

Also, with the scale tool, I noticed he managed to extend only one side of a block/rectangle without altering the opposite, when I use it, it affects the whole object.

    Assistance if possible.

  19. DandierSphinx says:

Excellent tutorial, loved how you also explained the shortkeys.
It was very helpful for me, cause I just started with 3ds max, and most other tutorials I watched just skipped over the most basics.
Well thanks for the Tutorial hope to see more.
