Ballistic Shield: Day 1 – Modeling

Ballistic Shield: Day 1 – Modeling

Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series 'Ballistic Shield'

In this tutorial we’ll Model, UVMap and Texture a high poly Ballistic Shield in 3d Studio Max 2012. Throughout the project we’ll make extensive use of many of Max’s built in modeling tools and modifiers to create the shield. Once we have the high-res model constructed, we’ll go through a manual optimization process to significantly reduce the poly count before moving onto uvmapping and texturing in Days 2 & 3.

Any chance you can make a mapping and texturing part, more specificaly how to create difuse, specular, and specially the normal map (baked one).

    Thanks

    Great tutorials as per usual.

I seem to get this problem a lot, when I try to download the file it just loads in a new window? Is this something I am doing wrong or have set up wrong?

  8. Ben says:

Great tutorial, as always. Finding it very easy to speed through (thanks in large part to your and your brother’s other tutorials!), but still enjoying the practice and picking up some new things.

Looking forward to the texturing part, as it looks like you’ve achieved a really precise/clean finish, which I usually have trouble with.

    Thanks!

      Hey Man,

The UVMapping part should be up on site by the end of this week. And I’m hoping to get the Texturing section up the following week :)

    • Ben Tate says:
      Author

      Hey Akhi,

Go to the “Modes” menu in the top left corner of the Slate material editor and choose “Compact Material Editor…”. You can change back to the Slate Editor anytime by following the same process and choosing “Slate Material Editor”.

      Cheers,
      Ben

      Hey Derek,

If you right click on the “Part” link and go to “Save Link As…” it should let you save the video to your hard drive :)

      Cheers!
      Ben

Your tutorials are awesome, thanks for it.
Only think which is a little bit anoying are your loud mouse-clicks :)

  13. Coin-goD says:

Why do you optimize the model like that? Isn’t it easier to just remove the TurboSmooth modifiers and edit the low-poly mesh?

    That’s what I’m doing.

  14. Coin-goD says:

Nevermind, looks like this is not for games. :P (Your optimized mesh looks high-poly for games)

  15. Zaya says:
