Cgtuts+ Workshop #8 Bathroom Interior

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another video or render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Boris Stribrnsky!

A Little Background

This is my very first render. I decided to do it in a blue color and created it just to test my experience. Please leave comments or ideas on what is necessary, or what I should do better to improve this render :)

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

Also be sure to check out more of Boris’s work on his website: Vizualizacie

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

    Nice first render Boris!

In terms of improvements: It’s not clear whether the ornaments are imprinted on the glass or hanging via string or something in the background. They look like they are just suspended in the air. Also I think they are unnecessary and distract the viewer from other more interesting elements of the render.

I don’t like the colour choice for the cupboard on the left. It clashes with the nicer blue you have on the tiles.

Finally the light on the bath is particularly overexposed. This may be what you’re going for but I think it would look better if you dialed it down a bit.

This of course is my personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt ;)

    Looks great!
Aside from Tachyon’s comments, I think that the reflections on the ornaments are too sharp. At some points, they seem transparent. and a lower reflectivity would make them easier to see.

Also, I’m not quite sure what the object beside the sink is, but it seems to be floating. Is that intentional, or is there something missing?

Besides that and Tachyon’s observations, it looks great.

It’s a nice start. Aside from what other people have mentioned, I think the two things that jump out at me most are the artifacts in the wall tile reflections, and the ceiling being too dark. I think the reflections in the tiles seem to have some sort of grain or artifact. They look “chunky”. And the ceiling seems like there’s too much shadow, keeping it from feeling like a sunlit room. It should have some nice reflected light up there.

The light up toward the ceiling on the right seems a bit awkward. Doesn’t feel like someone would put a light there, as it doesn’t do all that much for the room.

Also, the two vases toward the back beside the window have faceting. Is this intentional? Because it looks like polygon hard edges.

The ornate window curtain doesn’t bother me so much. I kinda like it, though the individual pieces seem a bit large. I also think the image could benefit from some post processing like a subtle glow on the highlights. Maybe even some ambient occlusion to bring out the shadow details and make it look a bit more photo real.

Thanks for comments. Yes, I agree. That color is absolutelly different from blue on tiles, but I render this image a bit longer on my old maschine so I keept it as it is. Also agree with overexposed picture, thats why ALL folks think that ornaments flying, no they hang on a chain :) If you zoom it, you can see a bit of them.

The main problem for me is the use of three point perspective which over exagerates and distorts what is in reality a flat 2D illusion of 3D. Try it with just two point perspective and the wall and door wont seem to be leaning out
