Cgtuts+ Workshop #6 Central Courtyard

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Animation, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another video or render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Zernan Suarez!

A Little Background

This scene is a central courtyard with a landscape water feature, rectangular glass roof and a timber pergola that filters daylight.

I used the following software to create this scene:

  • Sketchup
  • VRay for Sketchup
  • Photoshop

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

Also be sure to check out more of Zernan’s work on his website: ZDesign

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

stone textures are so flat, they needs some disp. or maybe some normal bump

  • Ryan Wilson

Apart from the stone textures being flat, I’m not joking, it looks REAL to me!

  • naftolimann

    dude! looks good to me!

  • Alex

    Looks perfect, congratulations!

Hey this is a 3D site, no photography… :P Nah, seriously, I love, especially the lighting. Like others, he may be the rocks and I add, the metal beam that seems muffled. Perhaps this is intentional. ;) Really good!

The lighting is great. Using the roof with the wooden slats loos great. The ivy makes things look less cg and more random and organic. The composition is good, and the shape of the room doesnt seem to easy to shot correctly so you did a fantastic job there. All around 9 out of 10

The materials on the chairs and the four different stone/rock/brick.granite materials are flat. It works in areas like b the water becasue these are man made but bump channels with the bump shadow box checked would help. If that isnt enough displacement maps will up the render time and te realisim.

The color mapping could use some burn to create even more drama. Linear multiply Exponential, HSV and reinhard all play with the burn value in such different ways that you can get HUGE changes in your realism from messing wiht that and working in 32 bit once in photshop

Caustics reflecting into your stairs and areas surrounding the water feature would help sell the water more.

This is an amazing render and there isnt a client on earth that wouldnt be happy, especially in 2010 when the link between vray and sketchup wasnt as strong as today. This shouldnt be in here becasue if this isnt “perfect” than much else isnt.

This is a veterns attempt at the same courtyard and I think they are both great

    Congrats on kicking ass

Well I have no real criticism of these images.. I’ve seen professional Arch Vis companies making huge amounts of money from images far less realistic.. What most people fail to realise is their idea of photo-real, is not actually to that many clients taste… Take Fryrender/ Mawxell for instance.. while they may well be unbiased…using real world lighting and materials and physically correct algorithms..to many, they still look fake. great but not as real as would they expect.

Furthermore knowing this is done in Sketchup certainly proves one thing.. You don’t need to spend a fortune on these hyper expensive programs to produce photo realistic renders.

This thing about the rocks and the bump/disp map thing.. To be quite honest, at this distance from the wall, I really don’t see that it would make that much difference and quite frankly if that’s the only things others can find fault with, then they are in my opinion grabbing at straws

This is a perfect example of inexpensive software, producing the goods yet again

    Excellent work

Reality is in your head, it is but your brains interpretation of what you see, smell, hear, touch and taste.. Same for computer generated images.. they are nothing but an interpretation, your eyes see only a small part of the picture, it’s your brain that produces the complete image.. and your brain is not the same as everyone else’s…. So here is a question for you.. Who sees the true reality or do none of us really see reality at all
