Cgtuts+ Workshop #32 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s take a look, here’s this week’s entry created by Stanislav Jordanov Dinev!

A Little Background

This is a render of a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. I’ve done this render using one of your HDRI images and background plates of which I’m very appreciative. I’d like people to critique on everything they find to make the render better looking and more realistic in particular.

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

It’s almost too distracting to comment on anything else, but if you’re going to make a car driving shot, with blurred background and spinning wheels (the wheels would be more blurred by the way given the blurriness of the background), please actually have a driver in the shot. Or else put that strobing LED strip on the front of the car so I know it’s a KITT from Knight Rider.

I agree with Arvin the very first thing I noticed was the lack of driver. Its a little difficult to see anything else after that. Also I agree that the blur on the rims should be exaggerated but at the very least try rotating the wheels so the spokes aren’t in the same location front and back. Its the little things that make a render really work well.

I think your best bet would be to render this out in layers and bring it into Photoshop for some heavy post work. Personally, I would blur the far edges of the car, esp the passanger side mirror since the depth of field on the render doesn’t match that of the background shot. I would also spend some time tweaking the contrast in the shadows and highlights to dull out some of the highs/lows to match a slightly overcast back plate.

Overall I’d say this is a pretty well composed shot (rule of thirds, decent focal point, etc) I just feel like a lot of realism can be added by fixing those little details that make the render cam and back plate cam match a little better.

Thanks about the comments guys . I’ll keep this in my mind for future renders. :)
