Cgtuts+ Workshop #29 1968 Camaro

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice – Kim would particularly like critiques on the rendering.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Kim Patil!

A Little Background

I love the 1968 Camaro and wanted to do one for a long time, I also wanted the car to look powerful hence added the supercharger. I like the fact that I modeled this car and also did the lighting and rendering and I think I have done a decent job.

I would like feedback on the rendering, specifically because the environment is black and it was very difficult to get a good result, this is the only image in my collection that looks decent in a black environment.

Also be sure to check out more of Kim’s work on Behance

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

Thank you for having a look.

I dont know why You decided to put that render. I dont lke that front shot, it is unnatural. Picture need to tell a story. Maybe if You will choose back it would be something like ‘iam going away’, ‘You cant get me’. But right now, i dont know, it looks strange. I bet that if You google car You will not find shot like this, maybe someone how is trying to sell one will put some cell phone photos :D . The yellow one or the secound red in your collection looks far better in that common ‘speed’ pose. Actualy common stuff is good, people buy common stuff.
Model looks awsome I dont think there is somethink to add here. Well there is always a place for improvement but it is not changing the fact that it looks good.
Materials and light can be a little better. I am not the lighting expert myself and its a big topic so i will skip that part, but there is a place for improvment. Materials are looking fine they are natural unles You are not looking on that front glass. I dont know how many cars with black window You are passing each day, but You can trust me, thare something wrong with it. Its fine if You are making a prototype or cartoon car but for realistic render its preaty bad. Right now its something like ‘ I dont want to model anything inside so lets make black window noone will notice’. i am not saying I need to see all inside just top off steering wheel and sits will be enough. I just feel that more realistic glass material, more common would be better here.
Summing up Its realy good work, some changes should be done but general wiev is fine.

Thank you rrtk for your comprehensive feedback, I am glad that you took the time to review my work and give some very good feedback. One thing that you might not know is that the 2 latest pictures in my portfolio are recently added ie (between me submitting this picture to cgtuts+ and cgtuts+ putting it on the website) so this was the best image that I had . Another thing is that I am slightly tired of rendering the “speed” poses, I think they are too common and don’t do justice to this car. I wanted the car to look powerful, mean and maybe imposing, So I went with this head-on shot as it kind of shows off the squatted stance also brings the supercharger into focus making it look powerful. In short I wanted to do something different, wanted to try new style.
You got me on the front glass, to be honest I was just immensely lazy there, I’ll surely do something about that and you feedback is well taken. Finally thanks for your time and I am happy that you chose to critique my work.

Thanks for having a look, I also love that shader came out pretty well.

    Really good work.

I actually like this angle, simply because its not typical and something you don’t see very often. What you could do, is to add a “rim-light” or some other light, just to accentuate the tyres. Right now they are disappearing a bit. Just a little light to add the form of the tyres.

    Very nice work.

Thank you for having a look, I agree about the tires they do seem to be disappearing. I am glad you like this angle.

  • Patick

Very nice work! There are only very few things that I would improve.
    1. The tires – right now they’re too dark, they’re almost invisible when you look at the picture from a distance.
    2. Maybe you could add some highlights or reflections to the windshield, so that one can actually see it and get an impression of its reflective / shiny behaviour.

Other than that I think this is awesome. I also like the angle. As far as story-telling goes I’m not sure, I think sometimes pictures can just function in a way that they are showcasing cool objects in a nice, aesthetic way. However, even if you wanted to interpret some sort of story into this angle: to me it seems like it’s rolling out of some sort of dark garage, coming into the light. It has this kind of “unleashing the beast” effect, I like it. Keep it up :-)

Thanks for the feedback, as pointed out by other guys here the windshield does look out of place and to be honest I just missed out on assigning it a glass material.
I can see what you’re trying to say about the tires I also feel the same now I think they should have been illuminated a bit more. Thanks for having a look.
