Cgtuts+ Workshop #28 Floating House

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Benjamin Scotford!

A Little Background

I wanted this image to look like it is a floating house that someone is living in, rather than a house dug up out of the ground and thrown into the air. Is this obvious enough?

Also be sure to check out more of Ben’s work on his Website

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

hi, there is wrong sky perspective, You should choose another BG image or change it to sth different than sky, other than that its ok

I agree with Masin. A BG showing the ground or town in the distance would really do a lot to sell the illusion of the house floating up in the sky. Other than that, the brick textures on the house and fireplace aren’t lining up where 2 sides meet. Still, pretty impressive job.

As already mentioned, your sky bg is warped. It almost looks like an off center skydome. If it is influencing the scene in any way, just hide it from the render, and use a different bg instead, or flatten this so it’s not warped.

The model is good. It’s simple, yet has just enough detail in the house. I would turn your sunlight around a bit to get some spec hits on the bike though, just to bring a bit more attention to it. The clump of dirt is very repetitive. You have little strands of roots in there, to show this has been ripped out of the ground, but the dirt needs more irregularity in the model and the texture. Let’s see some rocks in there, bigger, torn roots, and maybe a broken pipe? I would also add some more volume and shadow to your chimney smoke. It’s looking very flat. It looks like you have a weird shadow or something near the peak of the front of the house. Most of these things are relatively minor because this is working pretty well as it is. The grass is great, the little plants are good, I like this!

Your grass looks great and your rock looks ok, but to push it further I would put more geometry in there. The wood texture can be made with actual geometry like the roof The brick texture also doesn’t line up along the sides like a real house would, look at some reference. The brick also could be made into real geometry. The house looks pretty flat because of slapped on textures while your ground looks awesome, make them both awesome!
