Cgtuts+ Workshop #25 Low Poly Alley Way

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Fouad Karam!

Low Poly Alley Way

A Little Background

This is my attempt on a low poly environment of about 7000 polys and 1024×1024 texture maps for diffuse, specular and normal. Rendered in Marmoset toolbag. The mailbox is inspired from the tutorial of our own Chris Tate of CGtuts+, but was simplified for a low poly count.

It is based on an area of downtown Montreal using Google street view as reference. Please feel free to comment and provide criticism on all aspects of the image.

Also be sure to check out more of Fouad’s work on his Website

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

like it! But more dirt…means more trash like paper, plastic, newspapers, cans and so on.

Can we also post our renders??? if so how???…

for this one… is this incomplete or what… this is nothing special… Or might be, i dont know about low poly stuff…

Hey Nagesh, thanks for your comments.

This is not necessarily a complete scene and it has tons of room for adding props and making it more interesting. I wanted to show my low poly abilities and with the amount of time I had, this is what I decided to present. I can probably go higher in the polycount since game engines can handle more these days.

For posting your own work, you can apply using this form here: http://www.formstack.com/forms/envato-tuts_workshop

      Cheers

        Thanks for the link …

and by the way, i liked the textures you did, but it looks … i am not getting the word… hmm,,, i mean there are only four houses to see… and cannot quite get to see everything, the plain wall is exposed and the inner street is not seen,

with respect i would ask you for some more…. i mean please post something quite with more houses, and if this one going to be dirty , make it more dirty… just saying that .. i like your work, its quality but not satisfied with the quantity , you presented…

hope you r understanding what i am intending to say…

The point of low poly renders is that they can be used for video games. Games run in real time, and you don’t want high polygon counts taking up processing power. For a low poly render, this is nice crisp modelling and good texture work.

Very nice. A better camera angle would be, well, better.

Yea I better camera angle would be helpful, but I like it looks cool
