Cgtuts+ Workshop #24 Madmen Inspired Desk

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Tom White!

A Little Background

After starting to watch the AMC series ‘Madmen’, I went about creating a scene reminiscent of the desk of lead character Donald Draper. Complete with whiskey, cigarettes, ashtray, lamp and ‘Sterling Cooper’ notepaper. I feel it captured the look of a typical 1960′s office. In the background is my take on the leather chairs and table, featured in a tutorial on CGtuts.

Also be sure to check out more of Tom’s work on his Website

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

The stylized color works well for the concept. If you were going for something very clean and not-too-realistic I’d still suggest adding depth of field, most photos taken from that angle with something that close to the foreground will have the background super out of focus.

If you wanted something even more realistic, in Photoshop I’d add some dewey droplets on the glass and some minor dust and stratches on the desk.

On a more nitpicky note, I feel like the focal point of the piece SHOULD be scotch glass, but since it’s the same color as the desk it’s getting obscured, and the blank piece of paper is taking a LOT of focus since it’s so bright. If the glass IS the focal point, I’d lower the camera a little bit so the paper is flatter, and the glass comes above the edge of the desk more.

Oh, also the smoke coming off the ashtray isn’t very realistic. If you did that in the 3d program, I suggest nixing it and doing it in 2d in Photoshop with some stock smoke effects.

looks good, maybe make a ceiling? If there is then sorry, or it looks like theres black infinity reflecting on the table. Any tips on the water and ice? That is my favorite part and it looks excellent. Also, at least one complex model, im not one to talk either. But maybe an old school telephone, six-shooter, or pen with glasses. just a thought, props.

    renderer? mr I would assume

The reflexion on the lamp on the desk is a blue sky, it’s supposed to be in an office right ?
