Cgtuts+ Workshop #22 First Car Render

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Dries Lamberechts!

First Car Render

A Little Background

My first car done in 3ds Max. It was my final assignment in school this year. I like the fact that the car paint really looks nice and realistic, and I think I’ve done a good job placing the car on the background. It’s rendered using Mental Ray by the way. Please offer critiques on the whole image. I really want to get better at this.

P.S.: My site could be offline because I’m currently building it.

Also be sure to check out more of Dries’s work on his Website

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

It looks good, nice composite. A couple of notes for improvement:

    - overall, the car is too dark, you should work on matching the light and exposure of your back-plate.
    - a better crop job would help place more focus on the car. Currently, the shadow is being cut off. There’s too much of the background compared to the car.
    - the glass doesn’t look very convincing. There should be more reflection and refraction. Maybe make the glass thicker and less transparent. Curved glass should distort the background.

I think you’ve done a good job, but with a few tweaks, you could easily make this shot look more realistic.
    Keep at it.

      Hi Geoff,
thanks for the comment. I’ll look into it and apply what you said.

Well, I’m a noobie, so don’t take my opinion to serious, but I really like the whole image. I would just point out two things:
    - the car should have more grain to it, to match the rest of the image grain, as it seems too “clean”
    - some edges on the car have flaws, in white (only saw it on full-size image though)

Keep up the good work =)

With regards to the realism of the render – the car is too dark compared to the environment so you really need to tweak that lighting. Maybe just bump up the radiosity levels? The shadows look fine to me so light positioning is good – it’s just light properties you’d need to be concerned with. Also the surfaces of the car require a fair bit of tweaking if you’re going for realism.

With regards to the composition itself – it needs some tweaking as well. Composing a shot properly really adds to the overall realism and although your choice of background image will impose some constraints on your composition there’s still a lot you can do to frame your subject matter appropriately. All in all though – for a first render this is great work. a BIG thumbs up from me. I hope you can improve on it and wish you good luck :)

Very nice, overall. However, the car and the building are a bit too clean. Realistically, they should be a bit dirtier. The car should have a few small scratches and the building should have a bit of grunge on it.
I can tell that you used few textures in this model, if any. I can see you probably used just materials. I think you should add some textures to the car for extra realism. That’s my opinion.

Try to make it less perfect. Do some lens-tweaks in photoshop (reversed lens corrections). Add chromatic aberration, blur the render 1 or 2 pixels, add a little lens-morph and try to match the noise with the photo. The low anti-aliasing makes the result also less realistic. Higher the amount of anti-aliasing or an other easy solution is to double the output size and scale it down to 50% in compositing. Hope it helps!

as a compositors point of wiew its allmost horrible to see the noise of the bg plate completely misssing from your car. and the glass, i agree with geof brown.

couple of little things and you can push it really much to realistic direction!

lAl the points above, plus the ground shadow is too sharp for what looks like a pre-dusk/dusk back plate. I think the strength is right, but the edges could do with being more diffused. Hope that helps! Good work.

    Nice render!
    some things that i caught:

-I think the rims could use a bit more texture, and maybe some dirt/dust
-The roof inside of the car has the same color as the outside, most cars have a different color for the interior.
