Cgtuts+ Workshop #17 Charren Salon Reception Area

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice – Chun would specifically like critiques on the Lighting, Textures, Design, as well as the overall image.
  • You can also link to another render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by Chun Min John Cheng!

Overall this is a really great image .Though I think the wood on the desk needs changed ,and the plants seem a bit weird .Though I really think you did a great job on this .

I agree that the wood needs some work, and the wall and shelves to the right look way too clean. Also maybe some edge detail where the wool tile meets the stone. I like the stylist chairs, that area looks interesting and makes me want to see more. Also the Charren text against that loud image doesn’t read well. Good job and tweak it a bit to make it a really nice scene

The logo on the desk , is far to “in your face”. and since it is undoubtedly on the front entrance to the salon, I would remove it completely

Wooden panel of desk looks far too chunky, against the much cleaner lines of the rest of the design. A smoother, cleaner finish would work much better I think

Needs some displacement in the wooden floor. it looks very flat at the moment

Single spot light in ceiling, looks out of place and seems to have no purpose. I would remove it

I’m not sure about the pole and ball feature, like the lonely spotlight, it seems out of place. a semi transparent glass panel… graduating left to right, from solid to transparent perhaps.

Overall image has good lighting… however it is perhaps a little to bright in places, especially the plant. which I agree with Shaun look a bit weird, almost plastic. A problem with a lot of visuals I have seem, is the the colour saturation of organic materials like plants, tends to be to high, making them look very fake.. it is quite rare to see highly saturated almost glowing leaves or bark in nature..

Finally can I ask if this is in the same Charren Image Hair Saloon (Salon), based in Kuala Lumpur
