Cgtuts+ Workshop #13 Corporate Kitchen

We’re back with another entry in our weekly community project, where we post a render or animation created by a member of the Cgtuts+ community, and ask you to provide feedback and constructive criticism on their work. It’s a great way to learn more about the intricacies of computer graphics, express your viewpoint, and have your own content critiqued by your fellow artists!

Quick Ground Rules

  • Be nice! We’ve deliberately chosen work that isn’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  • Feel free to offer any type of advice on – Modeling, Texturing, Materials, Lighting, Rendering, Composition, etc.
  • You can also link to another video or render that you feel offers a great example of this type of content done exceptionally well.

So let’s get to it, here’s this week’s entry created by André Lages!

A Little Background

A collection of modern kitchen furniture to be applied in corporate spaces. The composition and modeling was done in Autodesk Maya with Mental Ray, and later in Photoshop. I’m really glad with the final result and I’m committed to do some more.

Hope you like it!

Also be sure to check out more of André’s work on Behance!

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached this project or done things differently? Any thoughts on how it could be improved or taken to the next level. Chime in below!

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own video or 3D render? You can do so here! and have your work featured in a future Cgtuts+ Workshop!

I like this a lot, I’m a sucker for interior renders and I love to see a modern clean house like this.

The overall modeling is really good, and the lighting is great, maybe the highlight behind the knives is a bit too bright, but these are the details that make a render look so photorealistic like this one.

A couple of things I might do if would be to work a bit more some of the materials, maybe the texture on the kitchen module doors should be more noticeable, and a thing that a friend once told me is to make a render more realistic, the stuff laying around should be a little disorganized, maybe some knives on the table, and some dirty plates, just to make it more real-life.

Frankly I can find little to fault this one.. apart from a slight over use of glow, which give the image too much of a blurry/dreamy look…kitchens are functional no fanciful.. Oh and the sink material should have a blurry reflection, it’s to mirror like at the moment.. and finally, maybe add an image to the background (a personal thing because I’m not a big fan of that white glow through the windows)

Apart from that, a very nice job

I like it. I agree with the previous poster, the glow might be a little much, but if you’re going for a super-stylized look, it works. The only thing that I don’t like is the little plant beside the fridge. Seems like an odd place for a plant, and the plant also seems way too small. It’s smaller than the knife block! I would have just left it out myself.

    Otherwise, great work!

I am totally agree with the previous comments by the previous posters, plus I believe there is something unrealistic in lighting the dark part. This can not happen in real world. Also I think you need a tiny touch of color. Nice work

The overall render is looking great. A couple things do jump out at me that could push this further.

As previous comments show, the glow could be dialed back a bit. I think your AO pass needs longer falloff. The falloff is very tight in the corners, and might be a bit dark in the corners as well. I would try reducing the impact of the AO, and softening it’s effect.
The texture for the power outlet is very flat, and seems slightly large to me. You present some nice light switches, but the power outlet doesn’t match that same quality.
As Antonio mentioned, some more texture variation would add some more life to the render. I would add some color to it, even little things like fridge magnets, texture on the cabinets, or even just color to the blinds/curtains would be nice. Some color in the curtains would actually help bring some texture and a readable material to them.

Great job though, the modeling and lighting are the strongest arts of this!
