Cgtuts+ Quiz: Know Your CG

Cgtuts+ Quiz: Know Your CG

Today we’re kicking off something a little different and giving you a chance to test your knowledge of all things computer graphics. This being the first ever Cgtuts+ quiz, we’re starting off fairly easy with 20 questions related to Cg in general. Will you succeed? Will you be victorious? We don’t know, but find out after the jump!

Arg question 5 and 11 are mean. Depending on what you consider a face (normally quads although ofc internally they are being treated as tris), your answer can be wrong or right ;). Anyway the quiz is a bit too easy lol.

    • Philip H

This. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who missed those two.

  • kraosos

LOL, that is exactly what I wanted to say – mistakes in question 5 and 11come out from the same prerequisite

  • Jeremy

I gotta contest 5, and 11 is REALLY iffy too y’all. Them faces only got one side ya know.

    • Ernesto

      agree +

i think that they are almost the same question, if you mess up in one, you will do in the other (5 & 11), but what matters is actually learning from your mistakes

  • Barrie North

    + for q5 and q11 being misleading

score wise i got 85 because of the 2 above [and I didn't know Kung Fu panda was a Disney film... not seen it...]

  • Hugo

What the heck? Steve Jobs?! :)

  • Arleth

    my score is 60% :)))

Hey guys, Hope everyone is enjoying the quiz!

It was actually quit difficult for us to come up with a balanced set of questions. We wanted them to be general enough that everyone, regardless of software or skill level would have a descent shot at getting a good score. So some of the questions are extremely easy, others are quite difficult, and the rest are in the middle.

As for questions 5 & 11, while the answers are technically correct, it’s not necessarily the obvious choice. We weren’t trying to trick anyone into answering in-correctly, but we did intentionally word them to be a little misleading, just to keep everyone on their toes :)

    Cheers!
    Chris

“We wanted them to be general enough that everyone, regardless of software or skill level would have a descent shot at getting a good score”

doesn’t that defeat the point of the quiz somewhat?

      • http://www.christateonline.com Chris Tate

        Hey Laurence,

It sorta does, but we wanted everyone to have some fun taking it. That being said, we’ll be increasing the difficulty with each new quiz ;)

        Cheers!

Some questions were kinda vague. When it asked about how many faces one polygon has and how many faces a cube has, the question seemed incomplete. I mean, isn’t a face just a face? In a sense it can be not just a triangle. Atleast in maya each polygon is a face, including a triangle, quad, hexagon and all other single shapes. One cube’s side is one face. Well maybe maya just fucked up my terminology, but I always thought that face is just a synonym for the word polygon because in many tutorials and stuff they say “select this face” and click on an octagon lol.
Also about ILM, do they really use that? Never heard it anywhere outside this question (I am not in an industry, just asking if they actually use such a term because it seems kinda lame heh)

  • http://www.rendertom.com Tomas Sinkunas

Nice one. And regarding question 4 – in Cinema 4D default sub is 3:) And yeah, regarding faces – to me face is a polygon or n-gon, so these 2 questions are kinda vogue.

But still nice. I scored 80% at first time.

  • Thyago

At first time i had a score 75%. Good..

  • Intie

As others I’ve only had problems with 5 and 11. Tho 5 isn’t just misleading by its wording – it’s just downright unanswerable. If you insist that face = triangle (which imo isn’t) then triangle is polygon as well hence answer should be 1.

Also some questions are just lame with all answers except one being obviously fake. But fun quiz overall :)

  • mads

#5 and #11 was unfair :/ I only had 90% because of those.
And some of the questions was alittle to easy imo, but i was fun to test yourself :)
perhaps you could make another one in the future, thats alittle harder

  • Manuwarna

    I got 90% at the first try…..any way i learned some valuable things that i thought i knew… :) this is a good test…awesome Ben and CGTUTS…. :)

  • Karim

Ha ha ha! after the Quiz, I have just learned that the only thing I know is that I don’t know anything!!!

  • AntoxaGray

    70% I am.

  • http://www.nicolasplaire.com Nikko

90% I got it wrong at #2 [I said subdivision instead of topology, but I have to admit I didn't know this one well] and at #11 [I said 6 faces instead of 12, it was a really cool trick question and I fell for it, congrats!]. I’m quite happy with the results, because there was many other questions I was not 100% sure of the answer [everything that had to do with topology and meshes and everything]

    Hey guys,

It seems questions 5 & 11 are causing some controversy, so I’ll explain our thoughts behind them. I know it’s common to refer to polygons as faces, and faces as polygons. Everyone does it, including me (I do it all the time!) But there is technically a difference between the two as far as I know.

For example, if you have a simple quad polygon, it is only one polygon, but actually 2 faces (or triangles) due to the invisible edge that runs corner to corner. As far as I know most 3d packages don’t show this invisible edge by default, (at least 3dsmax doesn’t) but you can turn the option on.

I’m pretty sure it’s treated in a similar way in other software packages as well, but maybe I’m mistaken about that! and 3dsmax has corrupted my thinking! If so, let us know ;)

    Thanks guys!

  • Joao

Ben, in maya a “simple box” , known as cube, has 6 faces (12 triangles).

Since you asked faces, not polygons…u know what I mean.

    Anyways, tnks for this

  • James F

I got a couple wrong about faces because I never consider a poly to typically be 2 sided unless you make it so :/

Also got the subdivision factor one wrong

  • Pavanrzx

    That Quiz Was Awesome :D

  • http://altkeygraphics.com Tim A.

well look at that i learned something new about the faces vs. polygon. nice little quiz. was pretty fun to take and i was tempted to select the wrong answers just cause they were funny.

  • http://www.bartekskorupa.com Bartek Skorupa

Well. I got 70%. Questions 5 and 11 – wrong according to authors of the quiz, but I’m sure I answered correctly. The rest of my mistakes were about Pixar, Steve Jobs etc. Simply didn’t know those facts and didn’t guess correctly. I also have to admit that I didn’t know what “ILM” stands for.

  • https://twitter.com/aguilar_09/ alexis aguilar

    60% Not bad for a beginner :)

  • http://twitter.com/aguilar_09 alexis

    60% nada mal :)

    • Leaf

60% here as well, not bad for two Brazilian beginners!

I got the polygon questions wrong as did most people…If you had said ‘triangles’, my choice would have been different.

I think it was harsh to delve into technicalities when typically a ‘polygon’ is refered to a four sided face.

Quick search on the definition of polygon ‘A closed plane figure having three or more sides. Triangles, rectangles, and octagons are all examples of polygons’.

This means that both answers can be considered correct. Meaning flawed question! :(

    haha good fun though!

  • http://getemtopremo.com nasIsLike

90% at first (because of q5 and q11)

  • noko

70% I am ok with this.jpg I’m used to it since elementary school

  • Kristian

Coming from a background with a 3ds max, questions 5 and 11 was obvious. At least my modelling teacher told me that real meaning of the face is indeed a triangle. If you use max this is easy, not so for other packages though ;)

  • esteban028

    75% i don’t suck too much… hehehe
    no apesto tanto.

  • john paite

    85% first try not bad…

  • DarkPrince

    85%

  • AR

100% i knew it was too easy to be true, and yeah 5 and 11 very controversial unfortunely.

  • REY

    OH YEAH I GOT A 0%!!!!!!

  • Dominic

Yeah!!! 70% the first time. Awesome Quiz, need more like this on CGTUTS.

  • http://www.myrenderedthoughts.blogspot.com vinod

80%….nd expecting more and more technical

  • Andrew

I miss the 5 and 11 questions, but i realize that the poly have two faces: front and verse(backface) .
    Great test!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Luca

I would like to know which tool (or plugin) you used to create the Quiz.

I really need a Quiz Tool or a Quiz Plugin for WordPress to create a nice Quiz.
    thanks

  • mike

65% not bad for a beginner
