Win 1 of 3 Marmoset Toolbag V1.01 Licenses in our July Competition!
To celebrate the release of Marmoset Toolbag V1.01, the real-time model presentation tool, we’ve teamed up with 8monkeylabs to give away 3 full licenses in our fantastic July competition! Read on to find out how you can enter…
What is Marmoset Toolbag?
Marmoset Toolbag is a fully-featured, real-time material editor and presentation tool. You can easily import your models, add texture maps and custom environments as well as tweak material settings, all in real-time. Once you have your model looking exactly as you want, Toolbag gives you the ability to render out single images or setup full turntable animations which can then be captured using software such as Fraps or the open-source CamStudio. The video below shows a portion of just what is possible :
You can visit the 8monkeylabs site to read more about the application : http://www.8monkeylabs.com
What you can win
The three winners of the competition, jointly chosen by 8monkeylabs and Cgtuts+ will each be awarded one full, node-locked license for the newly released Marmoset Toolbag V1.01.
Please be aware that Toolbag is currently a Windows-only application, although it does run smoothly on OSX Bootcamp!
How to enter
This competition is now closed.
Using the many different features in the evaluation version of Marmoset Toolbag, we want you to come up the coolest image or animation you possibly can, and then post a link to it in the comments below. Don’t have a model you can use for your entry? No problem; Toolbag comes bundled with several simple models you are free to use. And remember, we’re not looking for the most complex model, just the coolest looking final result!
To get started, you’ll need to head over to the 8monkeylabs site and download an evaluation copy of the software. To do this, click this link and then at the bottom of the Toolbag page, click the top Add To Cart button on the Evaluation Download line. In the window that pops-up, click the Checkout button and then add in your information and click OK to be provided with your download link.
XEROX CODEThe evaluation version is fully-featured, allowing you to sample all of the available tools, and it lasts for 20 days. Once downloaded and installed be sure to take a look at the User Manual to quickly get up to speed on the application itself.
8monkeylabs have kindly offered to keep a close eye on the comments, so if you have any problems with the install, the workflow or any of the features, just leave a comment with as much detail as you can and they’ll do their best to get back to you quickly! Alternatively, you can email toolbag@8monkeylabs.com.
Submitting your entry
Once you have your final image or animation, we want you to upload it to one of the many free file hosting sites (MegaUpload, YouShare, Flickr, Youtube and Vimeo to name just a few) and then post a link in the comments below, making sure that you add the word ENTRY in capital letters to the start of your comment.
This competition is open worldwide, and runs for 14 days, so make sure to get your comment in before midnight on August 3rd, 2010, Pacific Standard Time.
Competition Rules
- Although you can post as many images and animations in the comments as you’d like (in fact, we encourage it!) each user can only have ONE final entry. If you submit more than one comment containing the text ENTRY, only the first comment will be counted.
- Envato staff and people who have written more than two tutorials/articles for a Tuts+ site are not eligible to enter.
- The judges decision is final, and no alternative prize is being offered.
Other than that, have fun, enjoy the software and good luck! I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

HDRi - 2009 Dusk Pink Sky only $25.00
wow great contest no doubt, I’m sure to participate
I would enter, but current version of marmoset works terribly on my computer. UI is all messed up and buttons are not where they are supposed to be.
Hi Edgar,
I’m sorry to hear that. Have you tried the latest point-release? Perhaps the Marmoset team could step in and help out here…
Thanks, and fingers crossed we’ll get it fixed!
Matt
The key to getting it to work is to change the resolution as it says in the setup documentation. I had the same problem, you’ll probably find that the buttons are “invisible” and several centemeters down from where they should be.
I had exactly the same issue
if you change the resolution within the cfg file, it should work fine.
Also, you can halve the resolution(or more depending on screen specs),and use the engine to showcase several models at once (which I did at a recent industry event)
These resolution and UI concerns sound a lot like symptoms of our old version of Toolbag that was released for free to the community in the Spring of 2009. Download the brand-spanking-new v1.01 release that we just launched last week, and let us know how it runs for you.
Thanks everyone, it was just old gpu drivers. It works great now.
Great to hear Edgar! And thanks to 8monkey and Rob AM for the for help
Matt
Nice! I’ll be using my recently completed building stuff then
ENTRY:
Well I guess I’ll get it started with one of the pieces from my portfolio. I had used marmoset to show it off before, but the dynamic lighting, shadows, and AO in the new version made a big difference.

Wow, this looks amazing! Would you mind showing the wire-frame?
Thanks, you can check out the breakdown on my website http://www.konradbeerbaum.com.
ENTRY:
Wow, this is an amazingly fine piece of software. It really defines the term “Beauty Shot”!
I’ve got two thing to show, the picture and the video. They are both of the same model, so I hope I’m not disqualified for this.
The license will help me fulfill my dream to become a game designer someday.

Once again, the model, “Imrod”, is by my fellow compatriot Dmitry Parkin, DWIII finalist.
Best of luck to all other contestants! Yours, Nick Sukharichev aka MisterCG.

It’s really nice to see that marmoset is being improved!
Well I’m a big fan of 2ww games and played many of them so I’ve modeled this sweet german weapon that was one of the first assault rifles in the history and influenced the creation of the famous AK-47:

By the way this was also part of my final thesis. I did the high and low poly modeling and the texturing as well. Hope you guys like it!
Good luck to everyone who are participating!
“World’s first assault rifle”! =)
Hey I know the comp is closed but I forgot to show 2 videos of my weapon!
Weapon 360° animation: http://www.vimeo.com/11382531
Weapon in Medal of Honor PA: http://www.vimeo.com/11379669
I imported the model in the game just for fun but since the game doesn’t support specular mapping the results are way worse than the ones in Marmo. Ah the sounds and clip are from the thompson. =)
ENTRY:
Its so good to see this has improved so much! I used the beta version and this just blew my mind
The only problem I found was the lack of scrolling bars in the Mat segments Chunks and Material, other then that it was a joy to work with.

Good luck everyone!
Really awesome work so far, everyone – looks like the Marmoset team and I are going to have a VERY tricky time judging! To everyone else : keep those entries coming, there’s just under one week left…
Cheers!
Matt
Haven’t checked out the new version yet, but three things I feel are missing from the beta are:
1) Glow/Emissive map support. I know in the old beta you had to add glow in Photoshop.
2) It would also be awesome if F12 screengrabs contained an alpha knockout of your model.
3) It would be nice if the camera FOV and shadow distance got saved in the post file.
ENTRY:

By the way, this model was around 14,778 tris with 1* 2048×2048 and 1* 1024×1024 texture. (Concept, model, and texture by me)
For some weird reason it says that it that my original post was 2:45am eventhough it’s 11:45pm. (I’m pacific standard time) Hope this error doesn’t effect the judges decision.
Thanks everyone for the entries! Let judging commence
We’ll have a winner announcement early next week!

I totally understand if i don’t make the cut
hey I have been working on a new character in marmoset and was wondering if there is a reason the wireframe flickers so much(lines keep disapearing and reappering and some are thicker), is there a remedy?
Just to verify, are you referring to the “outline” feature or “wireframe”? The outline will have much more prominent flickering while you’re rotating the mesh since it’s purpose is to outline the overall mesh and overlapping geometry. To a much lesser extent, we have noticed undesired flickering in wireframe mode. It has to do with the depth offset the wireframe is being rendered at, and we’ll definitely be cleaning that up on the next free point release.
In regards to wireframe lines being thicker than others…not entirely sure. It could possibly just an angle of viewing where two lines are almost directly overlapping.
ok thanks for the info, I hope it gets fixed soon, I may have to do a seperate material with the wireframe textured on it for now, i understand the flickering problem for the outline mode though.
I love the program!
These entries are freakin amazing! I mean wow, it’s probably good I didn’t enter in the end XD (technical issues). This stuff is too good
can it run on laptop with GMA 950 onboard of intel ?
